A quick note since the threads I've seen are pretty old on this. I just successfully replaced these switches after a failed attempt to paint them. Either my painting skills are lame or painting is just not a great idea (the plasticdip that I used was also peeling off quickly).
It took me about an hour and the use of T6, 10, and 30 wrenches plus a small flathead. I bought the replacement switches which are hard plastic like the rest of the controls from Amazon at this link: link. Or just search "Replacement A/C Heater Climate Control Switches for Porsche 997, 987 Boxster, Cayman." They cost $30 and one of the product images includes an installation video that I followed to the letter. And carefully.
Anyway, the new switches look great and I highly recommend them. I wish I'd done it years ago. The only problem I had was in the final removal of the old switches since I was worried I'd be breaking something. So I watched another video on it on YouTube and confirmed that I was doing it right.
