DIY oil change without lifting vehicle.

We just passed the 20k mile mark with the CS. I have been changing the oil every 5k miles out at work where we have a two post lift making the job very easy. Well, the lift was in use so I decided to change the oil at home.

I had always wondered if it was possible to change the oil without lifting the vehicle and I found the answer, JUST BARELY! First let me state that the vehicle is NOT lowered in any way and has the OEM 19" wheels. Also let me state that I am exactly 6'0" with a normal arm length for my height.

Working from the driver's side of the vehicle I was just barely able to reach the drain plug with my finger tips. I used a 3/8" drive 8mm alan socket with a small breaker bar to remove the drain plug and a 4" deep, 18"x12" tub to catch the oil. I had to let the socket and drain plug fall into the tub with the draining oil and retrieve them later. I then used a 3/8" drive 74mm/14 flute oil filter tool with the small breaker bar to remove the oil filter which was easier than the plug as it wasn't as far a reach. I let the oil from the filter drain into the same tub.

Reinstalling the filter was easy, but the drain plug really tested my reach. Using the allen socket as an extension I was just able to thread the plug into the drain hole. If you are any shorter than me then you will not be able to do this unless you have the arms of a monkey. Properly torquing the plug and filter housing was done with "click" type torque wrenches as there is not enough room to be able to see a dial.

The entire operation took about 45 minutes and not one drop of oil hit the garage floor. The hardest part was locating the Mobil 1 0W-40. I had to go to three different stores before I had collected 8 quarts.

Thats great to hear !! I just did mine but used ramps.Took the same amount of time .The 20K service has a whole list of items that need to be checked and If I am not mistaken requires a changing out of the Brake Fluid.I had that done as well .What are you going to do about the Service Engine Now warning light? I am turning mine off today with my Softronic Duramatic cable and software..my light came on at 20500

Was the car level on ramps, or was the front end up only?

I used a Strap Type and yes the Oil flowed fast in my opinion once the plug was loose.I also reversed the Crush washer on the Drain plug instead of putting a new one on cause I did not have one (Thats what a tech told me to do) and all went Perfect. The dealer here in WA wanted $490.00 to do the 20K Service and $199.00 for just an oil change so this is really a cost effective DIY .

The car turned two back in March. A couple of weeks before her birthday the service reminder started displaying. At the time there was slightly less than 15 k miles. We had all of the major 2 yr/20k maintenance done by the dealer along with replacement of the failing idler pulley.

Since then we have put another 5k miles. We didn't get a service reminder for the 20k event so I guess the maintenance is 2 years or 20k miles, whichever comes first.

I used the cap type filter wrench but I think there is enough room to use a strap type.

I had the same situation when I wanted to remove a bit of oil. Gave away my old ramps so had to do the contortion thing. Next time I will park the rear tyres on a brick or something similar.

I put the car on 2x10s the first time and trailer ramps the second. No problems other than the time I unknowingly let the drain plug fall into the oil container.

Naturally in went right into the drain hole and slowed the flow enough to put about a quart on the garage floor. Thank goodness for cat litter.

There are quite a few threads on here about changing oil, including nicely written articles.

Here are some tips:

1. Buy oil well ahead of time.
2. The filter housing shouldn't be removed with a strap wrench, as it can damage the housing. I suspect that a replacement will not be cheap.
3. Use a jack, like the Sears Lift-n-Secure system. Or park on some 2x10s as suggested above.

I would use ramps as a last resort. I prefer jack stands. But then again. I had a car fall off of an insecure support when I was a kid. And now I make certain to put heath and safety first.
