We had this discussion before and I think we are in the same position. I am too busy to sit down and put together a FAQ section from all the great data we have here. If someone else wants to do it I will glady get the FAQ up onto the site, but it is going to take someone else, or someone(s) plural to put this together first.

yeah...i think so too. AudiWorld has one and it helped me considerably when i first started using the forum there. I cant tell you how many people would hop on and ask the same question over and over.

SOAPBOX TIME /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/confused_smile.gif (nothing personal crazy fast)

I really hate the term noob. [/quote]Its demeaning..no matter what context you use it in it always makes the user sound like a smart *** and the 'noob' sound like a dork.

have you ever walked into a party or meeting after a group is already there talking and tried to joing their conversation. its not always easy, and having someone turn to you and say something like....noob...well, that would piss me off. <br style="font-weight: bold;" />

There will be many very intelligent people joining this board in the future. some will have a wealth of information to share and contribute. they may ask a question the rest of us know the answer to because we have been here longer. I was never offended when i asked a question on a board and someone took the time to write a quick..see the faq or check the search. so much nicer.

thats what i think anyway....

ok...off soapbox /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/beer2.gif

How about a wiki instead of a FAQ? That way, anyone can add to it and make changes as necessary. Tie that into the forum accounts and you won't have to worry about anyone defacing it or spamming it too much.

hmmmmmmmm,

I don't think anyone takes offense at 'noob' as short for newbie. It's used all over the place, and hey, everyone's a newbie sometime...

my $.02...

You'd be surprised at what will offend some people, Beez. Some folks might even be offended by a controversial screenname for a forum.../fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/teeth_smile.gif

RR,

Sorry - of you're going to get up on a soapbox (as you put it), you should expect people to comment on what you say.

If you can find me an ASP driven wiki page generator I might be able to incorporate it with this site. In a sense what it could be is a single forum message that any registered user has the permission to edit. Hmmm I'll think on that one for a bit.

When the letter comes (they get reports every 2 weeks so it might be a couple of weeks) tell them you set it up as a potential FAQ/WIKI site for this one and you didn't know about the domain naming conventions. Sign the paperwork stating that you aren't claiming IP rights and send it back to the attorney, or call her directly for more details.

I think Wiki would be a great idea - it takes the load of one person and allows the information to be much more upto date.

As for using words like 'noob' - the first time I read that post it stood out for me as well - just felt a bit out of 'place' /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/whatchutalkingabout_smile.gif

I have a technical question about how WIKI's operate. If everyone has author access, what is to stop someone from going in and deleting everything? Or if one person posts something about changing oil and another user disagrees and comes in and overwrites their posting with their own changing oil information, what stops that?

I still agree we need a FAQ here, but I'm trying to find the best way to implement it. I don't have time to author the whole thing so having other authors work on it is appealing, but I wouldn't want to see someone with bad intent come over and wipe out everyone's hard work either.

Suggestions?

There's normally a history so you can always roll back any undesirable changes. It's really up to the community to police itself.
Spam is normally more of a problem than users making changes.
