We're back with another Brake Pad Giveaway, we will be giving one set of pads (front or rear) to one randomly selected forum member from our entire range, just by participating in the below thread!

In past giveaways We have discussed our first cars, garage and storage spaces, famous people we have met or would like to have met and weird and wonderful vehicles amongst other topics.

For this giveaway we would like to start a discussion for all new drivers; what top tip would you give to your younger self when learning to drive? Either as a complete beginner on the streets or for your first time hitting the track, what valuable lesson do you wish you knew that you can bless a younger generation with?

The lucky winner will be randomly selected and announced within a few days after the closing date of 1st April 2022 and details will be posted on this forum within a few days of the closing date.

Please be aware that this thread may appear in more than one section on the forum and one winner will be selected from the whole forum, not a winner per thread.
Pad choice will be based on availability and where a chosen pad is unavailable, an alternative will be offered.

If you are not the lucky winner, EBC Brakes are pleased to be able to offer a 10% discount off their braking products to all members of the forum community using code FORUM10USER
This discount code can be redeemed at EBC Brakes Direct | EBC Brake Pads | EBC Brake Discs or with our USA partners at Perfect Brakes | EBC Brake Pads | EBC Rotors

Any questions or application issues please let us know.

GOOD LUCK………

My son just got his license and is learning to drive a clutch So this has actually been in mind for a bit.

I would say practice as much as you can driving a stick so you realize how enjoyable it can be. And also, learn how the clutch can be used to control the car just as much as the brake and the gas.

1-one-thousand, 2-two-thousand, 3-three thousand.. and for a real beginner 4-four thousand.

This equates to following time. How many seconds should the new driver (and really ALL drivers) be behind the car in front of them? A minimum of 3-4 seconds for a new driver. A minimum of 2-3 seconds for an experienced driver.

No matter how good your brakes are (and my Boxster brakes are excellent) a driver has to allow time for them to recognize the car in front of them is braking or doing something else threatening, then react to that action and execute a safe action to keep from having an accident. How many run-into accidents do you see at intersections where it's obvious the following driver was following too close to REACT and stop safely?

As I've gotten older I tend to move even more toward 3-4 seconds following distance. My reaction time isn't what it was when I was 20 - 55 years ago.

1-one-thousand, 2-two-thousand, 3-three thousand.. - it's something I live by (and adaptive cruise control has adopted..)

The best advice for a new driver? Start out as a new rider first.

The best way to learn is to ride a small displacement motorcycle (250cc or less). You learn almost immediately that you are vulnerable, that virtually everyone on the road is potentially going to drive as if you aren't there, and that your safety and well-being are in your own hands - and no one else's. You won't be distracted by your cell phone, your friends in the back seat, or by reaching for that radio or milkshake. You will develop situational awareness and a healthy respect for those multi-ton metal missiles around you.

Once you've spent a year on a motorcycle, you will be a much more defensive driver, more aware and more ready to deal with whatever you come across.

I have always been of the same opinion. And will add that you will also know how to operate a clutch. Everyone should have to get their motorcycle license first, baring physical disabilities that would make this impossible.

If I could share a tip to my younger self, it would be to attend to a Performance Driver Education course. As a Father, I enrolled my teenage son into both the BMW Ultimate Driver - Teen Driver Course and the TireRack Sponsored Teen Driving Course. These made him a more aware and confident driver. Learning what to do in extreme driving situations/conditions is invaluable!
