But seriously, it's probably just a free OBD2 port scan check to see if the computer has any stored codes.

It means if you get a Check Engine (or whatever cryptic message you see) they'll pull the code for free then charge you some outrageous $$$ to fix it and clear the code.

Because the OP is in CA, this might be worth a few bucks if he doesn't have another way to read codes. The auto supply places don't do it and don't loan readers in CA. The remaining "free" places tend to require waiting until an employee has time. Buying or borrowing a code reader are the other options to avoid paying for it.
