How'd the install go? I am tempted to try this using ramps or jack stands... vs waiting to use a friends lift.
I have had the thing sitting in a box for a few weeks now and its driving me mad not to have it installed!:(
I used jack stands myself and it worked just fine.

mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;} </style> <![endif]--> I thought about installing it myself as well but I couldn't wait so I had it done by a local Porsche mechanic while I'm @ work. The install looks pretty simple but I guess its more convenient to have a hoist than jack stands or ramps.

My impression: I bought the black chrome tips and looks mean!!! The sound is very race car like and I've been warned many times that this is recommended for track use only because of the aggressive sound. I want an aggressive sound so I pulled the trigger on the race exhaust. First three days ridding I suffered from nausea. I rode it again yesterday and seems to enjoy it more now (or I partially lost my hearing. LOL.) Seriously, I'm used to the sound now and dont mind the drone anymore. Would I consider the maxflo version if they give me an exchange for free? Maybe not... I like the aggressive sound and absolutely dont regret getting the race version.

PJM_311 thank you for the compliments regarding the exhaust system. You can try to pull the tips away from the rear valence to reduce the drone inside the cabin, or just keep the RPM's above 2800 when cruising.

I just joined Planet-9 as this is the best forum out there for cayman/boxster owners. So when is the next group buy? My just purchased 2011 Boxster spyder wants the race exhaust. I have had their supercups on my 1997 Porsche 911 C2S and they were awesome.

Joey we talked on the phone a few weeks ago. You told me about someone who used straight pipes that extended 3 inches behind the valence and he liked the reduction he got in resonance. I tried 5 inches behind the valence and I was pleasantly rewarded when I drove the car. I then thought I would quantify the results by borrowing an i Phone with the decible meter ap. I measured 3 variations on the vehicle.
My subjective evaluations:
1) No tips (my idea for reduced weight)- terrible resonance inside cabin
2) Tips all the way rearward- slightly less resonance
3) 5 inch extended straight pipes (slip over fabspeed exit pipes - less resonance than item 2)

I then got the iPhone to quantify. Conditions:
All testing done on flat ground at 74 mph on the same day on the same stretch of interstate. I have a PDK Cayman R, and tested with the windows closed and the stereo off, low fan speed on AC, in 7th gear (rpm around 2075). iPhone held in a consistent manner near shift lever.
Results:
1) 88 dB
2) 88 dB
3) 86 dB

In my car I get the max resonance around 2600 rpm. So I tested that condition also by using a lower gear around 45 mph working to get the max dB reading for each of the 3 conditions.
Results:
1) 100 dB max
2) 100 dB max
3) 99 dB max

At idle holding the iphone near the exhaust exit I got the same dB results and the same cool subjective sound for all 3 conditions.

Subjectively I sense that there is a bigger difference between the 3 conditions that the iPhone did not pick up at 74 mph constant crusing. I also realize that the dB scale is not linear.

Subjective if I rate the stock exhaust (non - PSE) at a 0 (0 resonance)
and make an arbitrary scale:
1) no tips on Fabspeed race exhaust and call that a 10
2) then with the Fabspeed tips as far rearward as possible would be a 9
3) the 5 inch extended straight pipes would be a 8

With no tips at all I could not even accelerate very slowly without having terrible resonance inside the cabin. With the 5 inch extended pipes I can accelerate at a speed that most people, not in a hurry, would pull away from a traffic light, with little resonance.

Having a friend drive my car past me multiple times under various conditions proved to me that the resonance is just inside the cabin. In other words the car does not sound at all like a 4 cyl Japanese car with a 4 inch muffler outlet. It sounds super cool from the outside while it is resonating inside the cabin. Of course it also sounds extremely cool inside the cabin at all rpms other than the 2000 to 3000 rpm range.

Trying rubber washers to isolate the stock muffler hanger from the transmission had no effect.

The resonance only occurs in the 2-3K range, with the engine under load. If the transmission is not in gear and you rev the engine there is no resonance (not sure if anybody mentioned this yet).

I like the Fabspeed Race exhaust and the improvement I made with the 5 inch pipes if I am just driving for a few hours. I took a 1000 mile trip over the past 2 days. It was very pleasant to hear the cool sounds and burbles while I was driving thru hilly country with twisty roads. But near the end of the return trip of boring flat interstate at 68 mph (less than 2000 rpm) the constant sound was getting to me because I had driven 1000 miles in a 2 day period. However getting home, getting a good nights sleep and driving this morning I loved the sound again and had a blast. I would highly recommend the Fabspeed Race exhaust, unless you plan to drive on the highway in the 2000 to 3000 rpm range constantly. Those of you with the 6 speed manual transmission should not have a problem since interstate crusing speed will be at 3000 rpm or above. As others have said you can drive around the resonance by rpm selection, PDK cars included.

The issue with drone is not the decibel level but the frequency. It is a lower boomy sound which is unpleasant. Using a decibel meter won't really show the difference, you will want to try something that measures the frequency and amplitude of the sound waves produced by the exhaust at the 2200-2900 RPM range.

Thanks for the explanation to my statement:
Subjectively I sense that there is a bigger difference between the 3 conditions that the iPhone did not pick up at 74 mph constant crusing.

Fantastic! I love it when people try to fix things and measure the results.

Some of the GT3 exhaust tips are just blackened straight pipes, and I think they look pretty cool. Can you post a pic of what you did?

I currently have the Borla, and it sounds like the Fabspeed is the only thing better -- if you can handle the noise. I feel bad for you guys with the PDK (although I want PDK too). At 74 mph in 6th gear, my 6-speed is turning 3000 rpm, and so I very rarely experience drone for more than a few seconds at a time on my drives.

I just joined Planet-9 as this is the best forum out there for cayman/boxster owners. So when is the next group buy? My just purchased 2011 Boxster spyder wants the race exhaust. I have had their supercups on my 1997 Porsche 911 C2S and they were awesome.

Joey we talked on the phone a few weeks ago. You told me about someone who used straight pipes that extended 3 inches behind the valence and he liked the reduction he got in resonance. I tried 5 inches behind the valence and I was pleasantly rewarded when I drove the car. I then thought I would quantify the results by borrowing an i Phone with the decible meter ap. I measured 3 variations on the vehicle.
My subjective evaluations:
1) No tips (my idea for reduced weight)- terrible resonance inside cabin
2) Tips all the way rearward- slightly less resonance
3) 5 inch extended straight pipes (slip over fabspeed exit pipes - less resonance than item 2)

Thank you for posting your data regarding the three tip options. The customer with the tip extension came back last week for the addition of our Sport Headers on his Boxster Spyder. He drove in another Cayman S with the Race Exhaust and he noticed a wider "drone" area in the RPM range compared to his Spyder. This option will decrease the drone, but will not completely rid the drone from these vehicles.

Maxflo products are now available for the new 981 Boxster/Boxster S. Here is a quick sound clip of the Race Exhaust installed with the OEM headers. The setup is very similar to the 986/987/987.2 and saves 15.9 lbs. / 7.2 kg from the rear. Power increase is 13HP/10 ft-lbs. of torque to the engine.

Just placed an order with Fisher Motors in Barrington for a Fabspeed Maxflo for my 2008 Boxster S. I am looking to get a little more sound out of my mistress.... I really appreciate this thread as I have envied all of you who have taken advantage of the GB. Now the wait....
