Boost low end performance through resonance. Matching proper intake length for given rpms. Thus the debate on aftermarket plenums.

It's actually a pretty cool effect which uses pressure waves driven the momentum of the air flowing through the intake to compress more air into the cylinder, almost like a supercharger. The resonant frequency changes depending on RPM, hence the flapper valve to adjust the properties of the chamber.

And, if memory serves why you see that the after market plenums which eliminate the flapper show power increases at mid range and up rpm (4,000 sh).
