You beat me to the punch, since that was my first reaction. As someone who has raced on numerous occasions, I can tell you there's no way that I would ever stand that close to a racing car, unless of course there was a significant barrier separating cars and spectators. Tires blow or suspension parts can catastrophically fail, which can instantly put the car off the road. It's hard to judge the cars' speed, but they were going at least a 100' a sec which can put the car into the spectator area in an eye blink.
