In the sense it is a 3.8L, yes, it is a 911 engine. But all 9A1 engines are very similar. The major difference once you get past the bore size is mostly bolt on stuff. Porsche makes engines like a baker makes cakes. They have different ingredients. More powerful engines get better crankshafts and rods. Better flowing heads and different camshafts, etc.
The major mechanical differences between a 991 engine and a 981 are in the engine mounts, wiring harness, exhaust manifolds/headers, and the oil filter manifold, intake plenums and throttle body size. But these are external bolt-ons to the same, or substantially similar engines.
Regarding engine cooling, it says it can sense when the car is driven "sporty" and opens a value reducing the coolant temperature - (which apparently we only see the temp 194 degrees according to the notes) and when in Sport Mode. We should be able to see a subsequent drop in Oil Temp as well.
Can anyone currently driving a GT4 confirm a) the coolant temp reads 194 always or does it read actual coolant temp, and b) does the oil temp drops when in "sport mode"?
The usual coolant temperature is 221° F (105° C) when the engine of the Cayman GT4is at operating temperature; it is reduced to 185° F (85° C) during sporty driving and inSport/Sport Plus mode by opening (energizing) the thermostat. This supports aperformance-oriented driving style.
This is what happens on the GTS ( water temps deadband around normal operating temp always show 194F). If you go above those temps, you will get the real temp.
Also, I have seen oil temps drop 10F or more just switching to sport + from std on the highway ( and manually reselecting the same gear so rpms didn't change).
There is absolutely ZERO "service" information in the Service Information file you posted. If you look at page 4 it even says "Note
The Service Information Technik is not intended as a basis for repairs or for the
diagnosis of technical problems. Further information for this purpose is available in
PIWIS.
The Service Information Techniks are better described as Technical Sales brochures. They contain technical details and descriptions of new products and innovations of a new model or new additions to a previous model. They do not contain any service information such as how to perform an oil change, remove the engine, adjust the suspension etc. If you want the actual service information for your Porsche you need the WSM.
If you want to know more about getting the service information for the 981, now including the GT4, please PM or email me.
This was the one that is about 130 pages, has details about the construction of the car, not really a service manual it usually says "Technik Introduction" and are produced for specific models. I am waiting for a 718 Spyder and would like to compare the 981 GT4 details to the new model.
Eventually I am hoping to add the WSM and Information Technik for the 718 Spyder to my collection.
Thanks in advance!
