I am over from the Cayman 987.1 board with 211,000 miles and no oil consumption between changes. I’m thinking about a Panamera. I read almost all the Panamera posts and didn’t like what I saw about oil use. Am I seeing the typical thing where only the few vocal minority surface on the Internet? I do not want to add oil every 500 miles! Also, thinking this could be the last opportunity in my life to have a V8 (and not since my ‘74 Torino 351C). Is the V8 a user too? Thanks, C.

Crispy, Seems that the Panamera crowd is not seating the rings and cylinder walls when new like your 987.1 with 211,000 miles. With no oil additions between changes, I would say you did an excellent job way back in 2006-08. I also do not need to add oil between changes, but have only 60,000 miles. Still, I am careful warming up my car every day I drive it. No full throttle on ramp events until its fully warmed up. I try not to use it to go for groceries or other local errands. If you really want to get a Panamera, look at that engine block and how the cylinder walls were coated. What type of rings were used etc. Go through the whole Lake Speed rings to cylinder wall videos. Your question opens a whole new thread and should be in the Panamera category as the answer is never a simple one in Porsche land.

Agree with Apex. I going to guess that most of the non-sports car Porsche world is a bit like
Your average car by way of how it’s treated/maintained (not all). Lots of folks that don’t know and frankly don’t give a chit because they feel they don’t have too, but this applies to lots of makes/people.. personally I wouldn’t buy one because the resale doesn’t seem to hold up… again, unless it’s a 911/cayman etc… most brands don’t (MB, bmw, audi etc). I’m sure if you bought one though since your already aware of what can happen you’ll do your homework and be fine… so many people buy cars on this end because of the badge and have no idea what a Nikasil lined cylinder wall is…😂
I’ve always wanted to get a first gen VR6 Touareg/Cayenne and lift it, but two p-car$ are enough for me

I have an older brother who was my Porsche inspiration. He has been driving a 997.1 C4S for about 10 years. He taunted me forever and then just short of a year ago when I fetched a 987.1 he was stunned. Both that I FINALLY got a Porsche and that I got one so pristine for the co$t I did.
I have fallen on my sword many times, almost daily, in regards to "you were right big bro. I should have listened earlier"

So...... Another brother, our little brother, decided he needed to follow suit, but he isn't even an auto enthusiasts. Certainly not a sports car enthusiasts. He ran out and grabbed a Panamera Hybrid. We both were a little shocked, but hey, whatever floats your boat. I know very little about them but it became obvious very quickly that the discussion between the 997/987 brothers was very different from the discussion between the Panamera and the 997/987 brothers. Lol
He couldn't "relate", nor could we. I fear that could have been a big part of the reason, but his ownership was very short. Maybe 3-4 months.

It was a beautiful car, inside and out. But definitely a different product. He didn't own it long enough for me to learn much, but he never mentioned anything about any problem(s).

The resale part isn’t all that important to me as I drive most of my cars into high miles and in salt and nobody wants them anyway. That’s why I’m worried because I’m a little unsure about my “homework”. It seems hit-or-miss when you read one owner to the next. Most owners at this level are having their oil changed. I’ve never had an engine scoped. Is this the tool of choice for screening an oil eater?

Hit and miss is basically what I was getting at… mostly the miss part as most people just don’t know until they know… then they’re like “holy chit I had no idea they could break and cost this much”
Well, that’s not entirely true on the last part. You buy a Porsche you should already know the cost to repair if something bad happens

Sorry, old thread, I know...

I have a 970 Panamera V8 - and they do use oil! I need to add about a litre every 6 months (5000 miles?) or so. I never heard anyone needing to add oil every 500 miles.

You really shouldn’t have to right? If you do then there could be something going on but the characteristics of a flat 6 and the manual say different ( 900-1200 miles ). it’s all on how it’s driven too. It’s such a topic because of the cost of a motor/rebuilt. Thankfully there (flat 6) worth rebuilding,
Most high end cars sadly become mechanically totaled.. unless you are skilled and have the means to do it all yourself… 95% of people do not
