Hi All, Not sure what gave me this idea, but I finally got around to removing the dealer license plate holder and decided to try painting a thin strip around the tag to match the car. It actually turned out pretty well. I also took the time to replace the stock screws with stainless steel screws that I washed and also painted. Take a look. This might officially be illegal since I "altered" the tag, but can't imagine getting stopped for it. I was thinking of getting a personalized plate anyway, but will try this for a while...

You are required to have a license plate frame in NC? The free ads for the dealer on plate frames come off my cars within minutes of taking delivery. No plate frames look best, IMO.

Lime-Gold all around. But only after I paid to paint the lic surround which back in 2013 came in black. Ugh!

PA does not like covered plates but in 25 yrs never been stopped or cited.

No, sorry for the confusion. You don't have to have a frame - I believe in NC they say the frame cannot block any of the writing on the plate or the stickers. The "illegal" part referred to the fact that I made a permanent change to the plate itself. I suppose permanent is left to interpretation, but since I didn't change any of the numbers I think it OK based on the statute - lots of legaleze but here it is:
Alteration, Disguise, or Concealment of Numbers. - Any operator of a motor vehicle who shall willfully mutilate, bend, twist, cover or cause to be covered or partially covered by any bumper, light, spare tire, tire rack, strap, or other device, or who shall paint, enamel, emboss, stamp, print, perforate, or alter or add to or cut off any part or portion of a registration plate or the figures or letters thereon, or who shall place or deposit or cause to be placed or deposited any oil, grease, or other substance upon such registration plates for the purpose of making dust adhere thereto, or who shall deface, disfigure, change, or attempt to change any letter or figure thereon, or who shall display a number plate in other than a horizontal upright position, shall be guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor. <that's a mouthful!>

Seems clear to me. I doubt you'd get stopped or ticketed, unless the cop was looking for a reason.

Seems clear to me that he's giving any and all police officers, a 24k gold-plated invitation to take him to jail, at any time of the night or day, 24/7.

PCA, check it out. I think you should go for it. Maybe use some yellow vinyl that you can remove if questioned!

Up here in Washington State the popular thing to do is CUT the front license plate so only the number/letter combo is left. Hmm.

That's a cool idea. I would like to do my license border in Racing Yellow, and also convert my FL plate oranges to lemons. Do you think that would be a little too aggressive?
I'm sure the lemons will stand out lol.

What's that mounted above the plate and to the right? Camera?

2 items there. The little gizmo to the right with the lense is the backup camera for my Pioneer AVIV-X850BT HU. The wider gizmo above my plate is the rear radar/laser detector/jammer for my builtin Escort 9500ci. 1st owner spent a ton for aftermarket stuff and then traded it on a whim after 17 months and 2400 miles.
