A Porsche mechanic informed me that the M96 engine only has one solenoid (VarioCam) and the M97 has two solenoids (VarioCam & Ram)....can anyone confirm this is accurate?

I am trying to source an M96 engine to replace my M97 and want to make sure nothing is too drastically different. I know the IMS on some M96's are smaller and can be replaced, this is what is desirable to me.

Thanks!

The engine you are looking for is a M96.04 - this is the 3.6L engine from the 02-05 Carrera. It has the smaller, serviceable IMS, the full VarioCam + articulation, and uses the same ECU as the 3.4L Cayman.

Then send it off to L&N to get 3.8L Nickies put in along with better rods, pistons, and bearings, and the IMS Solution and you have a 320 HP monster for your Cayman. Add in a EVOMS, IPD plenum and GT3 throttle body, and a Softronics tune and you are looking at near 350HP. These are WHP figures too.
