I've been looking at a 2007 Cayman S at Leith Porsche in Cary, NC on autotrader. It has all the options and colors I want. The only problem is that the car's previous owner was a smoker. The sales rep. told me it still has a residual ozone smell from the detailer's treatment. I didn't go into much more detail with him at the time since I pretty much lost interest at that point. Since that conversation last week, I've been doing some research about how to get rid of cigarette smoke in cars. From what I've learned and professionals I've talked to, it's a challenge, but can be done in about 95% of cases. A prof. detailer for Lambo./Maserati in STL I talked to said that cigar smoke will never be eliminated but there are ozone treatments and bombs that are effective in eliminating cigarette smoke.

If anyone near Cary, NC is interested, I'd like to have someone look at the car for me and take a good wiff inside. The ozone smell should go away in time and with some detailing. My concern is with it's effectiveness in this cases.

My experience is that a non smoker will always smell it no matter what they do. And it's never pleasant.

A possible concern is if it matters beyond just being annoying. For me it's both an allergen and a migraine trigger. I've had rentals and loaners the were "non-smoking" with no detectable smell. Not terribly hard to do since my since of smell is poor. Yet after a short period of time comes the stopped up head and migraine. Close inspection usually reveals the tell tales of prior smoking. Small burns etc. They may be able to mask or delete the smell but not the consequences.

The odor may fade and you may become accustomed to it, but some residue is likely to remain. Short answer - it never goes completely away. Pick another car.

Plenty of smoke free cars out there. Smoke is some nasty stuff...not worth finding out how far the funk crept IMO.

I've talked to detailers that said it should go away in a few days so I'd like to know if it has. And, if the original cigarette smell is gone. While your there, could you also notice for any defects in the interior or exterior that are beyond what you would expect for a vehicle of this age and mileage? It has around 26K miles.

Will do. I shoudl be able to get by Leith tomorrow on Tuesday and if it's the car I think, I'll see if I can contact the owner. (Have met him, don't know him well, if this is the car I think it is.)

I was looking at this car too! That dealer had a great deal on a CPO Cayman, '07, Carrera White a couple of months ago. Asking price was only $30,700. Missed out on that one.

Did you think it smelled pretty bad? It sounds like it's history now anyway?
That car was on target for me which is why I kept looking at it online at least and talking with professional detailers. Had the right balance of price, mileage, options, and colors. Perhaps we can help each other. There's a guy in our local PCA that just posted one similar, but lower miles/ higher price.

I am actually not local (from Fort Wayne, IN actually)...but I just happened to purchase another '07 Cayman (base) from a private party in Cary, NC. Don't ask me why all my main targets were in that city; my search was basically nationwide. Coincidence I guess. I had Leith inspect the car for me, and am putting the final touches on the transaction. Got a pretty good deal, I think, and though the car is private party, it has 1.5 years of warranty left.
