Interesting news/rumor?

I was @ my dealer today, I asked my salesman about the new 998s, he mentioned that since ducati owns a 998 brand, the new 911's won't be 998s but instead will be 119s.

Anyone hear anything about that?

I've got to say, I am not so sure the salesperson is in the know on this one. It is probably a little too premature to speculate anyway. No idea where the 119 number fits in there...

I was shocked when he mentioned that.

Didn't know if I should burst in laughter or believe him.

I think the larger question is what comes after the 991? Had Porsche chosen to stick with 998, there would of course be the 999 option after that, but likewise by going to 991 you have only the 992 option before bumping up against the 993 name. AFAIK 994 and 995 were unused unless some race car got those designations. Eventually they will run out of numbers and have to go to more digits or something more drastic, or maybe they are just signaling the end of the 911? ;)

Similarly will the new Cayman/Boxster be the 988 or 981? at least by going to 981 they still have 982-985 to play with I think...

The car will still be sold as a 911 so why does it matter that the factory code will infringe on Ducati. It' not even close to the Peugeot 901 dispute.

I wondered what Porsche was going to do when they ran out of numbers. Porsche and BMW numbered themselves into a corner by skipping numbers in their designations.

It doesn't matter if Ducati owns 998. These numbers, 993, 987, 996, 997 are all internal numbers only. The official designation is 911, Boxster, Cayman, etc. The part numbers begin with 993.XXX or 997.XXX or 998.XXX, but Ducati's ownership over 998 has no bearing on what numbers Porsche uses for parts.

The dealer you talked to must be dyslexic. :taunt: According to multiple sources on the web, the code name is 991. It's supposed to be launched late this year.

I was VERY surprised to read that the new 911's sales should start in early 2011 when I had previously read in many different places that it's early 2012. Maybe there is an error in the article?
