The 550 is the quintessential Porsche Sports car. Back in 1980 I had the pleasure of driving a 550 at Watkins Glen. The car belonged to my boss, and he still owns it. My recollection is that car only had about 150 HP, but I believe its curb weight was about 1300 lbs.
Although it's been over 30 years, I can still recall what a challenge it was to drive that car hard. I imagine that I pushed the 550 to no more than 90% of its max, but I still almost lost control a few times. It would take many hours behind the wheel to master that beast. I have a great deal of respect for the drivers who raced the 550 back in the 50s. They not only had outstanding racing skill, but they must have had an equal amount of courage to drive that car fast.
