Overland / Off-Road events in 2022
This is just a partial list of events - please add to this events happening in your area!
.
What is an Overland event, some are called Rally's
We have been attending these for ~ 9 years now. Have found them to be very family oriented. A good bang for the buck to learn and refresh current practices. They have classes covering a lot of information for your next adventure. Everything from vehicle preparation, navigation, meal preparation, recovery, how to pack, plan and a lot more. We have enjoyed learning how to drive our car on the technical course. The instructors help both the driver and spotter to find the best 'line' to negotiate obstacles. For the young ones they offer both good training in subjects like first aid, to activities keeping their interest.
All this is helpful for both a weekend adventure and those lasting much longer.

Including rally events here too -
The Thunderbird Rally is traditionally held in the beginning of February. Thunderbird Rally is a winter driving adventure through snow and ice covered back roads in the British Columbia interior. Following the Thunderbird route is simple, but staying out of the snow banks is not. This event is suitable for ordinary road cars. There are classes for Historic cars, Novice teams and different levels of navigation equipment. Enjoy friendly competition with teams from BC, Alaska, Alberta, Washington, Oregon and beyond.
With COVID and border crossing, we are hoping this challenging event takes place - stay tuned!

The seasons are changing and the summer overland events are popping up!
Once again 'Otis' our 958 diesel has been asked to lead trail runs at the Northwest Overland Rally
These events are the best way to learn how to off-road safely. Just like DE and other track events there is a lot to learn from vehicle set-up, gear, and getting the nut behind the steering wheel up to speed. Just like track there are etiquette standards to ensure everyone's safety and preservation of the off-road trails. Leave No Trace is a good place to start. Good way to see what and how others do, what works and what does not.

'Otis' will be leading trail runs at the NW Overland Rally this weekend.
Hope to see some of y'all out there in Plain, WA
Our first run will be 08:30 Friday morning up to the Sugarloaf Peak fire lookout. The lookout was established in 1914 and is still in active use. Goes w/o saying that the views will be outstanding! Runs will become more challenging thru the weekend.

Curious about what this thing called 'Overlanding' is about? We will post some of our own experience at the NWOR when we collect ourselves after this wonderful annual event we have attended for 8 years now. After a COVID break this NWOR was like a family reunion.
Look for similar events in your area, if you can not find one we can help.

" Nestled in the Beaver Valley and surrounded by the pine trees of the Wenatchee National Forest and the Cascade Mountains lies a field that, once a year, fills with trucks, vans, and cars, old and new, tents of all shapes and sizes, and overland fanatics, young and old(er). The brainchild of Ray and Marianne Hyland, the Northwest Overland Rally caters to families, those looking to join group trail rides (by bicycle or vehicle), and keeners curious about anything from winching to photography, off-pavement driving skills, or seasoning your cast iron pot. Join a wine tasting, whiskey sharing, or happy hour session before the evening’s lively campfire presentation and raffle. The event is intimate and community-oriented.
After a two-year hiatus, the rally returns to Plain, Washington, on Thursday, June 16, 2022. I eagerly peeked at the schedule and am looking forward to attending this weekend’s event. Unsurprisingly, there’s an array of classes, presentations, and experiences for just about anyone. There are ample classes for youngsters (What to Pack, presented by the kiddos themselves, could be particularly enjoyable), for the ladies (Rebelle Rally is hosting a women-only happy hour, trail ride, and more), and for those looking to brush up on their recovery skills. I’ve scoured the timetable, written down my favorites, and outlined them below. Don’t forget to grab a brat, pretzel, and beer in the nearby Bavarian village of Leavenworth. It’s a tradition. "
