Hello Lads, I was going to take my 2015 CS PDK out for a little drive this morning. However, it would not go into reverse. I turned off the ignition, removed the key and restarted the engine...same result. This time, I pulled the shifter on into Drive and the indicator on the gauge indicated it was in 1st gear. The car is in my garage and I had some room to test Drive. As soon as I released the brake it moved forward and made a loud bang or clang. I immediately put her into Park. Upon restarting I noticed the third gauge was flashing the message to put transmission into P. I have an appointment for Wednesday at me dealer to check it out. It will have to be towed (flatbed). It is under warranty until Jan, 2021, so I should be covered.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Good that you are under warranty still, a PDK is an expensive replacement if needed!

VERY good that you are still under warranty. I had a similar experience with a high mileage 2009 PDK, well out of warranty. Could not find an Independent Porsche specialist or transmission shop to work on or even try to repair it. Was very surprised that no dismantelers had replacements available (3 or 4 took my name and number, but no one has called). Dealer's original quote to replace with a rebuilt PDK was $$$. The Service Manager worked lots of magic, good will discounts, PCA discounts, and who knows what else to get the number down significantly, but it still ended up being a painfully expensive repair.

I hope your story ends more happily!!

Hate to see more PDK failures reported. Seems like every generation of Porsche has a major critical flaw that affects a relatively small number of cars, but costs a ton to fix if you're one of the unlucky ones.

986/996 had IMS, 987/997 had cylinder sleeve/scoring, 981/991 seems to be PDK.

Out of curiosity care to share how much the financial damage was? Friend of mine with e92 m3 had to pay 10k to replace his manual transmission and clutch. Ouch.

Replaced the transmission? Not that I have worked on any lately but I would have thought repair would have been possible unless it was a catastrophic failure?

I worry about the PDK's for owners 15-20 years down the road, what then?

I worry about all the cool electronics in general for any modern car in 15-20 years. So much that cannot be serviced or repaired without very specialized OEM support. Will we in 20 years see no classic cars that newer than, say, 2010, because all those later ones just cannot be maintained anymore?

Yes, this too, we all want connectivity, apps, sensors, auto collision avoidance, lane departure warning, etc, etc... This might prove very interesting as these systems age and fail, a whole new industry will be removing some of the systems so you can still drive the car, but wait maybe not a worry, autonomous driving cars may be the only ones allowed on the road! :hilarious:

Dealer Service Department original quote to replace failed transmission was just over $14,000.00. That's when I went shopping for a repair shop, but couldn't find a single shop who said they could work a PDK. There were a few guys who said they knew tiptronics, but PDKs were a mystery to everyone. I tried local, then tried shops in other areas, but no dice. (There was one guy who said he could fix ANYTHING, but he then said it would be his first look at a PDK so I didn't feel good shipping the car to him in California.) Indie shops here in AZ told me they could install a replacement if I could find one. I started calling dismantlers - PDKs were 10 years old by then, so thought there would some available from wrecked cars. I couldn't find a single one. Finally went back to the dealer and let them know it is my 3rd Porsche, one of two in the family now, they are doing the maintenance for us, long time PCA member, DE instructor, everything we could think of. I'm not sure what the deciding factors were, but the dealer stepped up big time. The service bill mentions "warranty good will", and "core return"; unfortunately it also says, "I agree that the terms of this offer are legally confidential" between PCNA, the dealership, and me, so I'm not able to give more details or numbers. The agreement saved me enough that I am well satisfied to be going back to Penske Porsche of North Scottsdale for all maintenance that I can't do myself, even though both of our cars are now off warranty.

May be broken? I'll go out on a limb here and say that it is definitely broken.

Wow, $14,000 that is unreal, and if it converts up the $CDN at the going exchange rate that could be a $19,000 repair up here in Canada! :eek: I could buy a decent used Boxster for that money...

Good thing that you have a good working relationship with your dealer, we have less than a year remaining on the warranty for our Macan, might be time to consider an extension!

A couple points: Rebuilt parts (engines and transmissions) are sold as price plus core charge. The core is refunded, but the refund price can be pro-rated. Engines, for example, are prorated on the year manufactured, as the core is expected to have more miles, the older it is and requires more to refurbish. I don't know how Porsche handles core charges with catastrophic damage.

A PDK has two separate Park modes. I'll call one a mechanical lock and the other an electronic lock. There is a cable that goes from the underside of the shift lever to a lever on the right rear side of the transmission. The cable is a semi-solid/hollow tube that has nylon fasteners on both ends that attach to the levers via ball joints. Under some circumstances, the nylon cable end can pop off a ball joint, disassociating the mechanical lock from the shift lever position. This happened to my Boxster. The result for me was the car rolled in park. I can see the opposite happening where the mechanical lock engages when the car is in drive. That could result in pops and bangs as the engine fights to overcome the parking lock.

At the shift lever side, the nylon connector is a sprung two-piece part that can be opened up via pressure and twisting. It reveals a finned nylon piece on the end of the tube that fits into the nylon ball joint housing, Cable slack is set via changing how the fins seat in the ball joint housing. It is possible that heavy friction on the tube could cause the adjustment fins to break or slip, causing the adjustment to be off.

In my case, the dealer initially felt the transmission was broken but I asked them to move the shift lever into and out of park while someone watched the lever on the transmission from below. The lever did not move and they found the nylon end at the shift lever had popped off. They had to tear the center console apart to get to the end, but that was much cheaper than a new transmission.

I don't think that was the case for the original poster, but it is something to look for as 981 cars age. Lubrication of the parking cable is not on any service schedule that I know of and new replacement nylon ends are not cheap. A year ago, I bought the whole cable, used with good ends, for less than a new nylon end would cost from Porsche.

Has anyone been made to pay the full amount to replace a pdk? It would seem that Porsche is either paying for the replacement or paying a significant amount for it.

I think I will. A week ago I got numerous failure messages (2013 boxster base with <45k mi), then limp mode. Drove to my indy. He had it for a week and said it eventually would not go into gear at all. Then trailered it to the dealer. The dealer just told me they can't get to it until next week. Will let me know what they think then.

Wow, are you the original owner? Curious about how it was treated (track use) and scheduled maintenance, only 45k miles is not much for a transmission... please keep us posted!

ouch...one of the biggest nightmares on all modern sports cars. Dual clutch transmissions are very expensive to replace/cannot be repaired cost effectively like a traditional automatic. In fact I heard that's why most of the Germans (Audi BMW MB etc.)are switching over to automatics even on the sporty versions because a tuner friend of mine who rebuilt transmissions claimed the parts/labor are always in excess of 13k. Really worries me on all the modern porsches since they are all still sticking with PDKs. On certain lower-cost cars the cost wouldnt make sense to keep it (as 981 depreciates close to 30k or below). I feel as automatics (like ZF) get better and faster the DCT might be a thing of the past in the near future

Bought mine 3 yrs ago with 39100 mi. Had ppi which did not show signs of tracking or other abuse. Have put about 5k fairly gentle mi on since. Had mid major service done (plugs, all filters, oil, brake fluid, etc) at 40k. It's been great until last week.

Depending on the outcome (dealer closed today/tomorrow for 911 reveal party) on Monday, I'm thinking this might be a good thread starter.

Well from that description you seem to have been dealt a bad hand, it will be interesting to hear what happens, suggest a calm approach but hold your ground, did the dealer do the PPI?
