After thinking about a FVD/M&M exhaust for quite sometime (I've been happy with their exhaust on my 964) - I decided to go with a Soul PP Street Package for my 987.2 instead.

Mike provided great customer service throughout the decision process!

What tuning software did he use? Any other mods?

Here is my review:

I was initially considering a FVD/M&M exhaust, as I have a full FVD exhaust on my 964 and it sounds sublime. That said, I have an exhaust leak into the heating system on my FVD 964 exhaust so I can't use the heater (not an issue in Texas anymore). But if I wanted to fix it, I would have to ship the whole system back to Germany. That is rather cost and time prohibitive - I am happy to know that Soul Performance is within the US and seems to have great customer service should I ever have problems with my Cayman exhaust.
I was considering the FVD exhaust, however I have an exhaust leak into the heating system on my FVD 964 exhaust - and I would have to ship the whole system back to Germany to have it fixed. After taking that into consideration and some convincing by Soul Performance... I went with Soul Performance long tube street headers and valved exhaust system and had them installed in May at TPWS in Austin, TX on my 2009 Cayman S PDK.

The shop also did not follow the directions given by Soul performance for wiring so it took a considerably longer time to install the exhaust (5-6hrs?). I did not review the directions supplied by Soul Performance, but the tech said he did not want to tap the wires they recommended. I did ask for pictures he took showing his method, but he never forwarded them to me so I can't really comment on it.

Initial impressions. There is a considerable increase in NVH in the cabin from the OEM system (non-PSE), especially the vibration at certain RPMs. The vibration does resonate in the rear of the cabin. It would make more sense to start the car with valves closed, but due to the vacuum actuators I'm not sure if this is possible. I think the factory PSE also starts open but may automatically close after vacuum is built. With the SPP system you have to hold down the valves closed button in order to start the car quietly. You can program your homelink buttons to open and close the exhaust, however you have to use two separate buttons. The exhaust transforms the car's personality though. There is pleasant over run at low revs on lift off and it sounds very GT3-like in the upper revs. I am extremely happy with the sound other than increase in NVH even with the valves closed.

2 months later. I run with the valves open at all times, except on start-up in the mornings until I am out of the residential area. Sometimes I forget and it I don't think it is that obnoxious. The NVH in cabin is increased considerably from stock in general, but I quickly got over it. I find the increased NVH mostly enjoyable even at lower revs around town. I only am annoyed by the drone at highway speeds in 7th gear, 70-80mph. The drone has a low, booming tone to it - it disappears if you are on the throttle just to maintain speed, but if there is any miniscule amount of load you will hear the drone (nothing is flat here, so I basically hear the drone all the time). Downshifting into 6th increases the pitch of the drone and is louder but more pleasant. It isn't a deal-breaker and I am curious if the FVD exhaust has this problem or not.

Overall, I am very happy with the system and it exponentially increases the enjoyment of my car. I am very happy with all of my interactions with Soul Performance thus far.

Here is more information about his tune and mods:

Thank you for the review and thank you for choosing us! I'm curious why they didn't follow our wiring instructions, but we definitely would like to see how they wired it up.

We always find the subject of drone and NVH to be interesting and broad in terms of tolerance. We've had customers switch to our exhaust from others to cut down on droning. We have customers who think the Street package is too quiet and immediately switch out to Competition Headers. With ample time in our 987.2 S, I agree that you feel an increase in cabin presence, a very mild physical rumble almost. Not bad, I actually enjoy it, but my cars are always aggressively modded from lightweight flywheel to full exhaust so I'm grown accustomed and actually NEED this to feel enjoyment in my sports cars. It seems you've quickly adjusted which is good! Our mufflers are very good at minimizing drone given the amount of aggression that comes through, really glad to hear you like the GT3-esque notes! Most of the increase in presence is related to the aftermarket headers, when you uncork them you need effective mufflers to retain the civility as best you can.

We always recommend another look under the car after installation / several heat cycles to check for any exhaust leaks (especially if gaskets are re-used) and to make sure the hardware is all properly torqued as any issues there could exacerbate any negative sound quality traits.

Definitely stay in touch and let us know how you like it long term beyond initial impressions. We appreciate all feedback good, neutral, and bad to try and deliver a better product and better experience to our customers whenever possible! I'm looking forward to taking care of your future cars as well! Cheers and thank you for sharing you experience with all of us.

Hello,

My name is John Gaydos, SOUL's newest addition as their Performance Specialist. You may recognize my name from several past roles in the aftermarket performance industry, and I am now here now to take care of any of your needs. To say I’m excited to join the team and grow the company is an understatement. During my time here I aim to bring the SOUL brand and product line to greater national/international recognition. I will be expanding our product line and partnering with “A Players” in the industry to become the one-stop shop for everything you need to maximize your driving experience. In doing so, I will not lose site of our core values and will maintain a hands-on approach to our community and customer involvement. Expect to see me at shows and various tracks as I will be traveling to network and meet more good people/shops to work with. I will also be participating myself with my Cayman R. I’m aiming to instruct with PCA in the 2019 season both at track days and AutoX, and I plan on participating in some endurance racing series as well. We are going to have a lot of fun, and I invite you to join us! If you are in the Tristate Area, I'd love to meet up with some of the locals at upcoming events. Let me know what you are up to and when : )

Don't hesitate to reach out with any inquiries you have on enhancing your various vehicles, I would love to catch up and chat about your project. Feel free to email me at [email protected], or call/text me at 484 883 6197.

Now back on the thread topic...In the pursuit of performance improvements aerodynamics are often overlooked and undervalued, but not by Verus Engineering one of our newest and valued dealers. This time attack 987, built by our mutual dealer Gear One Performance, features our full exhaust package and the complete Verus Engineering aerodynamic package. We will be adding their aero upgrades to our website shortly, and look forward to many more collaborations with both these A players in the industry. If you'd like to discuss the benefits of not only our exhaust upgrades but upgrading the aero to maximize the handling/grip of your 987, feel free to reach out any time.

Increase engine response and add more flat six engine note with our Long Tube Street Headers! Built around HJS HD 200 cell catalytic converters and backed by a Lifetime Warranty, this is a great mod for your 987.2. We've put thousand of miles on them on our own Cayman S and can't imagine going back to stock! Let us know if you have any questions!
