Say goodbye to Carrara White

As of July 2012, Carrara White is replaced by White. This according to the Boxster catalog.

Interesting...particularly in light of the fact that Carrara White is not a true white. If you see a Carrara White Porsche next to an Ibis White Audi, you can see the difference and the Audi is 'whiter.'

So, I wonder if White is a 'whiter' color.

Edit: The US configurator has two colors of interest to this discussion for the new Boxster- Carrara White and White...but they look the same!

I compared the sample sheets at my dealer.

White is a cooler white, with a very slight hint of blue. Carrara White is a softer, warmer white, with a yellow tint.

I think White is used on the Cayenne, but alas, all the Cayennes at the dealer were black, so I couldn't compare it to a Carrara White car.

But yes, I would say that White appears whiter than Carrara White. Granted, the difference is small unless you see them next to each other, and probably very hard to see on a screen.

Edit: Come to think of it, yes, I think Audi's Ibis White is very similar to Porsche's White, and as you say, it is easy to see the difference between that and Carrara White.

Carrara White R.I.P.

Beautiful color, like the Italian marble on which it's based.

Very surprised they're discontinuing it. :(

My computer doesn't get along very well with the configurator, so I don't know what it says. It could be that both are available during a transitional period. However, the printed catalog clearly states that Carrara White will be replaced by White in July. This is the exact wording:

1) From 07/2012, replaced by White

See the footnote to Carrara White in the Personalisation section near the end of the catalog.

Maybe Porsche got tired of people referring to CarrAra White as CarrEra White.

I never thought I'd own a white car, since I always considered white the rental car color or coporate work truck color. But now I love it. I get so many compliments on my car just for the color or shall I say lack of color:hilarious:

Yes, could be true. Maybe while Porsche is in the changing mood, they should also change the name of the BoxSter since I notice a lot of people spell it Boxter.

I became a fan of Carrera White a week ago Friday when I got my Cayman R. I have had more compliments on it. One of the things that I have noticed is how it makes the car look wider from the rear. In fact, I have had many come up to me and say how much it looks like a race car.......and, that they love the color with the black accents and black wheels. It is striking.

+100

I am frankly astonished by how much more "well liked" this car is compared to my red or yellow car.

I think we have an instant classic on our hands.

It just looks "right".

I was actually advised by a German friend, and fellow Porsche-fanatic, to go for Carrara white on my CR "because it's a traditional Porsche racing-color" - as he said.

Well, I never regretted that decision.....

But it's another reason why I find the color being dropped to be quite strange. There are many shades of white on cars out there, and I do find Porsche's CW to be the most beautiful.

Funny coincidence.

I went in to test drive my R...knowing that it was white and knowing that I did not want a white one. Then I saw the car in person and really liked it.

Well, I did some diggin' in the archives, i.e. the Glasurit database (great resource).

This should be a historical timeline of white body colors, listed by time of introduction:

1954-1955: White 603
1957-1959: Glacier White 713
1973-1996: Grand Prix White 908
1976-1976: Atlas White 91Z
1977-1977: Polar White 90A
1978-1978: Alpine White 90B
1978-1991: Alpine White 90E
1981-1981: Fischsilber Perleffekt 164
1981-2007: Chiffon White 182
1985-1995: Perlglanz Weiss 0A9
1986-1988: Perlglanz Weiss 947
1994-1996: Grand Prix White 92R
1995-1999: Snow White 3AT
1995-1999: Snow White 3AU
1999-2001: Biarritz White 9A2
1999-2001: Biarritz White 9A3
1999-2012: Carrara White B9A
2001-2001: Polar White 9C1
2003-2012: Sand White R9A
2010-2012: Oryxweiss Perlmutt 0K1
2011-2012: Pure White C9A

Some colors appear twice, but with different color codes. Some are only listed in German (if anyone knows the English name, please let me know and I'll edit the post).

All in all, there have been 15 different shades of white (if counting variations with the same name as one). Note that this is for all models, as I didn't do a model specific search.

Interestingly, the White that we are discussing here is not yet listed. I doubt it is the same color code as the original white.

Fischsilber Perleffekt = Pearlescent SilverFish?

Perlglanz Weiss = Pearlgloss White

Oryxweiss Perlmutt = Oryx is an African antelope, Wiess is white and I think perlmutt is bone, so maybe ox bone white?

These are literal translations, with animals it doesn't mean the same thing without the cultural background which I have none and my german is terrible.

That's why I'm putting black wheels and accents on my new-to-me Carrara White CS as we speak. I specifically hunted down this color, which meant I placed a higher premium on the color than options (my car has none). This necessarily meant I had a LOT less used cars to choose from--and I will never regret making that call. This thing is, frankly, freaking beautiful. I'm into cars for driving, not ooohs and ahhhs, but when you can have both . . .

The funny thing is, for almost my entire car-dork life, I generally always HATED white cars. Now, they are some of my favorites, depending on the specific car. And as someone else mentioned, Carrara White on a Cayman is just IT. Everyone who sees this bad boy agrees, too.

I agree with you all… My 2009 Cayman arrived this past Saturday and Carrara White was the only color that I wanted. As a result, it took me a long time to find her (along with PDK + SC + BiXeon); not to mention I paid about 1.5K above market price due to the low supply… nevertheless, I absolutely do not regret of the decision after seeing how beautiful she is in white.
