2005 Boxster S. 81,000 miles. 6spd
I put the car in reverse but it would not come out.
so I crawled under the car was able to put the car in neutral. Now it shifts fine again. Albeit feels stiff before and after.
only when I’m not gentle shifting do I end up with the “broken shifter”.
I cango out and drive the car now but I don’t have much confidence it won’t leave me stranded.
Could this be a broken cable issue or something else?
I agree - it doesn't heal itself. I'd take apart the console and examine the shifter. Might be worn bushing. If it is an OEM shifter, this would be a good time to upgrade with the Function-First Shift-Right kit
However, the problem could be at the other end. Might be hanging-up somewhere in the transmission or levers. When was the gear lube last replaced? Might be a lot of things. So before just replacing parts - better have it looked-at by a specialist.
I have an 06 Boxster S, same car exactly with approx same miles 147000 kilometres .The shifter performance
was terrible, numb, rubbery, hard to get in gear ect ect. I changed the gear oil, and then installed the Function First
Linkage parts at the back and then the parts in the shifter under the gear shift. Like a different car now.
Direct, easy to shift, rubbery numb feeling gone! Still not what I wood call perfect or what I would expect from a
Porsche and definitely not as good a as a 30 year old Porsche with a G50 Tranny. Bottom Line, its pretty cheap
upgrade and I did it all my self. I found that the car was always hard to get in reverse and that bent the plastic
cradle slightly under the gear shift (yes plastic garbage) part canoe ordered and cheap, if u pull apart u will see what I mean when u shift in reverse. Also the rubber parts on the linkage at the tranny get even softer from wear and age and through the whole leakage off alignment. Lastly there is a small green plastic tool that Porsche
sells (cheap) used to line up shifter. (alignment tool) Worth getting if doing all of this.
I got stuck in neutral one evening - had AAA flatbed me home. When I put it up on the lift, found the lower shift cable (socket) had detached itself from the ball on the linkage plate.
I snapped the cable end back onto the ball and temporarily secured it to the linkage plate with a few zip-ties. I'm now designing a clamp made of spring steel to install over both the upper and lower the ball & socket ends of the cables.
There are some brilliant products for retro fit the cable heads. Porsche also changed the angle of the head piece to remove unwanted strain. Had them installed in my gen 2.
Could you elaborate on the retro-fit cable heads? ... maybe a link to a web site? I'd like to see what's currently offered before spending a lot of calories on fabricating my own method.
