I know there is a little drain in where the gas cap is located for any overspill that drains at the bottom of the car....so that maybe the reason...or you might have passed a gas station :)

This is not common but a faulty injector o-ring can cause a leak, and hence the fuel smell. If this is the guilty part it typically gets worse the harder you push the car. Given the fineness of spray and it's location in the motor housing it is extremely difficult to actually see visible signs of leakage. Also, the smell will be strongest at the side vent just after stopping.

You should remove the top and front engine cover, and with the engine running check for leaks on the fuel lines or fuel smell on the engine compartment.

If you do have a leak and don't take care of, your cayman could turn into a 'self cleaning oven' very quickly... :(
