Sprint Booster anyone?

7955 Views 45 Replies 22 Participants Last post by  Apex1

This technology has been around for years and they are the ones to invent it. Pedal Commander, as well as others, copied them and have similar items on the market. For those who don't know, it allows for a quicker opening of the throttle body, which essentially, creates better throttle response. Does anyone have firsthand experience?

I don't have a SprintBooster(SB) on my Porsche, but I do have it on my 2019 Mercedes GLA. In that car (which also has a "sports button") it makes an incredible difference. I was ready to sell the car until I put the SB on, now I'm perfectly happy with it.

Just do a search on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=sprintbooster) There are lots of "real world" examples.
I'd highly recommend watching this one done by a serious enthusiast in an N52 BMW:
He evaluates the effect on 0-60 time's by doing 5 launches without SB then 5 with SB to demonstrate the difference.

Results:
Without SB: 7.69, 8.02, 8.28, 7.71, 7.52 seconds Average 7.844 seconds
With SB: 7.51, 7.25, 7.24, 7.26, 7.2 seconds with an Average 7.292 seconds
over a half second improvement

I would say this mirrors my experience -- you can definitely feel the difference. I run it at a RM4 (One of the lower Race Mode settings) with the "Sports" setting turned on in my GLA.

My Porsche is a 2013 981 Boxster S with PDK. I've considered a SB for it, but, unlike the GLA, it really has adequate performance for my purposes right out of the box. People who have installed a SB into S's have said that it can become unpleasant in daily use (although it's incredibly easy to turn off).

For a little under $300 this is probably the best mod I've ever invested in. If you want better throttle responsiveness, it's an excellent solution.

I had a SB in a 99Mercedes CLK320 and it helped alot however, the race mode was too much. Now I have a 981Base and in Sport mode the throttle response is a hair below the SB mid level. If you have a pre981 I can see how it would be advantageous to have a DB. 981 w/Sport or Sport+ don't waist your money.
......to be honest i find the difference between sport and race marginal to say the least....?

I suspect it depends a lot on the car. In my GLA, the lower "Race" settings feel similar to the higher "Sport modes". With 18 different programs *, there's might be some overlap in lower throttle positions depending on your car's capabilities and the OEM mapping. For instance, I don't feel a big difference between S9 and R1, but there is certainly a big difference between S9 and R9 (R9 makes my GLA almost undrivable on public roads, the throttle becomes way to sensitive). Even in R4, you gotta be careful parking when you go into reverse.

* 18 for auto, 18 for manual in Sport or Race

....and i dare say there's a big difference in control between manual and automatic transmission too.
....the one thing i really miss about my 91 C4 vette is the instant low down awesome torque.... oh and the noise from the straight-piped V8

Although I have no first-hand knowledge of this, that does make perfect sense. One of the nice things about SB is that they tailor the program to your car and your transmission type. My GLA is, of course, a standard auto transmission. (IE, not a double clutch like the Porsche).
I have a similar effect just using a Softronic tune in my 987.2 S. It gives me more power at the high end, but also makes the throttle more responsive. As said above, the most noticeable benefit is for blipping the throttle on heel/toe.
I guess youre saying its the softtronic tune that gives more high end power and not the SB. I have a version 2 SB on my 987.2S PDK. It does make it more lively and responsive but not more powerful.
I bought the Sprint Booster to aid my torque curve from the apex to the exit and beginning of the straight. Sort of like the guy above from a standing start only moving. I had a Wavetrac LSD installed a couple of years ago, but was never completely happy about the car's response from the apex. The initial response to throttle just seemed slow, as the ECU learned bad behavior by not giving immediate throttle responses during street driving. The ECU software picks up my moderate driving style made possible by the very controllable Wavetrac LSD. I have a Softronic flash which I talked directly to Scott to include a fast throttle body reaction.
So, I slipped on my very soft soled car loafers and pushed the red #5 button. These shoes are a very important element as they are the sensory between me and the throttle. With the Red race button pushed, I can modulate in tight corners or long sweepers to my hearts content, mid corner to change the weight distribution setup for next corner, down shift blipping, or standing on the gas to squeeze into that space on the freeway without downshifting. What i wanted was a snap response to help with rotation using my new set of car shoe's RE71RS. Well, that rotation and modulation are a benefit of its quick action.
The Sprint Booster definitely helped the ECU get the right message. The slalom sections are a combo of both modulation and rotation so it certainly helped there. I have a sense that threshold braking with Sprint Booster, the throttle body closes faster as well allowing engine braking to occur faster.
I've got Scott's Softronic 987.1 race kit that includes an older 78 mm GT3 throttle body and plenum. At 2000 rpm, I floored it and it took a while for the air/fuel mixture to catch up, but at 3500 and flooring it, a totally different picture, instant pickup when Scott's Softronic ECU maps kicked in. .

Everyone hates on these until they get one. Then they wonder how they managed without it. Best cheap(ish) mod you can do.

Best, and most inexpensive mod one can add. Love my Sprint Booster, would never go back to original. Car feels so much smoother and more responsive. Fast, easy install and simple to use. My next step is to set up a PIN to utilize the Security mode. Can literally leave the keys in the ignition with Security mode enabled and some googan cannot even drive off in it, although I’m not going to put that theory into practice. I ALWAYS lock all my vehicles and remove all valuables. Heck, here in Florida, the Dumbshine State, we have roadside flashing signboards that read: Lock your vehicle and remove all firearms.

Highly recommend! It has transformed throttle response in my 07CS Sport Chrono. Simplicity at its best; it is a simple inline amp amplifying throttle signal to DME. It has two modes with 9 level adjustments each. I prefer Sport (green) level 7. Race mode (red) is crazy responsive. As stated earlier its one of the best low-cost performance mods out there. I always drive my CS in its Sport mode. Coupled with Sprint Booster..wow!! It has a switch on the SB control for Auto or Manual. For those that get one make sure you have the propper tranni selection.
Just installed it on my 987S without Sport Chronograph and it really makes the car feel more responsive and fun. Well worth the $300.

I noticed that the Red 5 really does make the throttle response immediate. It also changes the engine braking response as well. I would suggest to look at the throttle/foot contact which means your shoe. Heavy soled leather just do not conduct the right message, you need a very soft soled almost slipper that can give immediate sensitive response. Even entering a freeway on ramp and seeing an opening in traffic, the Sprint Booster Red 5 can have a sensational impart if you select the right gear to get it done. I drive a MT Cayman. I love the sensation of the motor reaction and even braking. Even in traffic rolling along at 30 mph, I can feather the motor downshifting through the gears into 1st almost to a stop without touching the brake.
Did i tell you I hate brake dust. My brakes are in top notch condition, yet still I have to clean my wheels more than my car. I have tried to get PCCB's (no brake dust and 6 pistons in front) but so far none available. So, its the SB that allows my motor to do this work,

I love mine, but I keep at a relatively low setting. All of the race modes were too crazy for the street. I keep mine on about Street 4 or 5.
Yea I have settled on Green 6 as my go to setting - love it
I’m a “Green 8” guy (in my 981C). And love this cheap mod.

I have the old version of Sprint Booster that only had 3 settings (off, green, red). I feel left out :( But is was such a back-breaker installing it, I'm not tempted to upgrade.
Shameless plug, but I have a Sprint Booster for the 981 models that I just posted in the Classifieds if anyone is interested in trying one out for half price.
