Okay folks, its time to start planning. Several of us have kicked around the idea of doing a drive to explore other areas, especially the Tail of the Dragon. My current plans may take me through that area sometime around the middle of April. That would be good because it would be before the heavy crowds show up. Caution, the weather at that time of year can be tricky, so we need to keep an eye on that and factor it into our travel plans.

After doing some preliminary research, I have a tentative itinerary for those leaving from the NYC area.
Day 1: drive to Lexington, KY and stop for the night (about a 9 hour drive)
Day 2: drive to the Tail of the Dragon (about 5 hours)
Day 3: explore Tail of the Dragon and surrounding areas
Day 4: head for home

If April does not work for the group, then we can kick around some other dates that would be convenient for most people.

I would appreciate SpinDoc or others that have previously done the run chime in with their suggestions for this trip. We could also coordinate with other regions and make this a larger gathering. As always, this is a starting point for suggestions, but we should try and avoid doing this when the area is more crowded with other tourists.

Gonzo, I had replied to another post about Blue Ridge (close to Tail of Dragon), thought I'll mention it here so to maybe help you out a little. You should know there is a Blue Ridge Boxster Summit (though not limited to Boxster only, they have had GT3, Turbos, someone showed up in a Lexus after selling the Boxster) coming up on June 3-6. This will be the 12th year and they usually have very good turn outs each year. I'm planning to drive up (from S. FL) for this year's event.

If you are thinking of having one event this year in that area, maybe you should consider contacting the BRBS organizers about expanding the BRBS event/venue for another 15 - 20 cars. The organizers have been running this for 11 years, so they already have contacts with a few hotels and attractions in the area. So, it should be less effort than starting something new. Check out the website and see if it meets what you're thinking of doing. HTH.

I am up for it, just relocated to Maryland. What city and state is the Tail of Dragon at? Sorry I only heard of it, not sure where it is exactly.

This is where we stay when we go on the Dragon. recommend to stay there the night before so you can do the Dragon before 7AM.

Blue Waters Mountain Lodge on Lake Santeetlah, North Carolina

here is another one "nearby" but harder to find

Blue Boar Inn on Lake Santeetlah, Graham Co NC 828-479-8126

unfortunately the Blue Waters Inn has only limited space. You also want to do the Little Dragon while there. Maybe Spin Doc can give us some pointers for additional roads.

I am in if you guys have room.

Well, Retired-Teach, we can definitely stay more than one day. I only wanted to throw out some ideas and get everyones input.
Blue Ridge Parkway may be a challenge for some of us with installed Escort 9500ci sytems.

How about we pull your a/c hose so you can swim in your car if it gets too hot.:taunt:
That won't be necessary anymore. Remember PistolPete now has a pair of custom catch basins for his car.:hilarious:

How does everyone feel about meeting at the starting point on April 15th? Then we could spend the 15th and 16th driving in the area before heading home.

I would also like to join the gang going the the Dragon.
I have been reading and looking at video of Dragon runs.
April is good for me.
I guess we just need a firm date and I am looking forward to making the run.

I live in Charlotte NC so it is not a long trip.

Hey caymanthusiast,

Get the turbo installed yet??
Hi Pete. Yes, it was installed late Nov. Unfortunately I've been abroad so haven't had much opportunity to give it a thorough testing. So far I do concur with others...it certainly adds another dimension to an already fantastic machine...without losing any of the Cayman DD manners either. Breaking loose PS2s in a straight line and 3rd gear, without trying too hard, and responsibly of course, is a somewhat grin-inducing capability for those who appreciate such things. Also, the exhaust sounds great and is not intrusive (IMHO).

I'll post more comprehensive feedback in the spring after more wheel time. Suffice to say, so far I'm very pleased, the car is even more fun to drive, and the entire crew at TPC were / are a pleasure to deal with.

Cheers,
Jim

p.s. Disclaimer: early impression. Given the stability of the platform under much greater power, I, like many others, consider it implausible that Porsche designed it without significantly higher performance in mind...regardless of long it might take for us to see it.

Its been far too quiet in this thread. Let's get a head count for a mid-April trip. We will drive the Dragon and surrounding roads on April 15th (Thursday) and 16th (Friday) which leaves us the weekend to leisurely make our way home. Who's in?

1. Gonzo
2. BigGuy
3. Schwabe
