I had my 2016 Cayman Base in for 20,000 mile service and decided to test drive the 718 Base and S. Love my dealer, he tossed me the keys and said have fun, let me know what you think when you get back. I did this as I am in the early stages of looking to move to my next (5th) Cayman. Let me say at the outset lest folks thing this is a bash the 718 (it is not), there were pros and cons but more pros than cons, on balance. Both were PDKs, both had Chrono.....I found that the 718s drove more like my previous Cayman R than my 981. In particular because I feel the 981 drives more refined than the 718. This is primarily due to the amount of engine sound that comes into the cabin and that sound is more 'coarse' than the 981's. The amount of sound is a pro, the coarseness is a con. The handling, steering, and throttle responsiveness were much sharper in the 781 than the 981 (Sport mode for all). Fit, finish, et al comparable. Now, to performance......very quick and a blast to drive. Assuming that I order an S, I will definitely be having to watch my speed. The impact of early to arrive and flat torque curve is very apparent, and enjoyable. Net, net.......did a configuration when I got home and sent it to my SA and asked him to let me know when he can get me an allocation.

The new car bug is a tough habit to crack :)

Did you notice any differences in sound btwn the base and S? Also, what options are you changing from your current car?

I think the Base sounded a bit more '4 cylinder like' than the S. The is the best way I can describe it. I was surprised at the amount of sound that made it into the cabin. Not sure if there is a difference in the firewall, sound absorption material, perhaps turbo positioning.......hard to tell but I was much more aware of the engine. In terms of configuration, it will be quite similar to my 2016 (not surprising as it took me 3 Caymans to get to the point of that specific equipment). The tuning of the steering and chassis was pretty evident. This is what I am thinking......

o Cayman S
o Night Blue Metallic
o Agate Grey
o Boxster S Wheels
o PDK
o Premium
o 14Way Seats w/Memory & PDLS
o PASM (I have X73 on my 2016)
o GT Sport Steering Wheel
o Silver Tips
o Colored Wheel Crests
o Deletion of Model Number
o Headlight Cleaning System Body Color
o Lane Change Assist (New and I like this.....it was on the S I test drove)
o Light Design Package (new for me)

Nice build. I don't know if you could squeeze PTV in but I think having torque vectoring LSD would be useful with all the added torque from the 718. Since you already have PASM, I think it's worth the add.

Thanks for this. I have asked several times for some explanation of why the 718 is "better" than the 981, and all I have heard is it is faster or the steering is quicker. Neither is necessarily better. This is much more useful.

Nice build. I agree with the idea of adding Porsche torque vectoring if possible.

I’m confused about what “silver tips “ is

I agree with your assessment of the base sound. It definitely had a more mechanical sound. So much so that I wasn't interested in it any further and was lamenting the lack of the six. The salesman talked me into trying the S and it was much better and I was intrigued. When we got back after the test drive, I spied a black GTS and it was equipped the way I liked and it looked menacing in black, so I went with it. I could've been happy with the S had I not seen the GTS.

an electric sound actuator is responsible for creating a sporty Porsche-specific sound in the passenger compartment of the vehicle

I could live with that.
