My '14 Cayman S has PCM. When I look at the two round knobs below the screen, there is a slot with a tiny chrome surround. It is directly below the "PHONE" button.

What is this? IMG_6790.jpg

I know it sounds crazy, but this is a SIM card (the old full-sized ones) slot in case you want your PCM to be your actual telephone (with its own number).

30 years ago people had “car phones”. Until 2016 Porsche was still making it possible...

Don’t assume it works. When car was purchased new, there was an option to make it operational. Yes, it was also to provide better cell signal strength using car antenna but with Bluetooth readily available, I did not opt to enable mine.

Interesting. How does one go about getting a phone number for one's car?
The SIM in your phone holds the number. Just like you can go to another country (if you have a phone that isn't locked to a carrier) and buy a SIM card and a phone number from a local carrier to use while there, you can (theoretically) buy one for your car as well. My wife and I always buy our phones from Apple and chose a local carrier; when travelling we take one phone a buy a SIM card (also do it with one iPad) in whatever country or region we're in.

They had a box under the passenger seat that was basically an analog cellphone or as they say "car phone"... The slot is the SIM card. NAV-TV makes an interface that looks like the box under the seat and connects to your existing BT phone, for models before BlueTooth was invented as they say, B.B.

Many European card had a cradle in the center console that had a connector that was common on cell phones that connected to the car. The iPhone/Android phones never implemented that device, so it went away.

Almost unbelievably, they even offered a phone handset that sat in the armrest storage compartment! Would love to know the take rate on that option!
