The unknown and questions unanswered.

I sort of have a fear of the unknown. You see the only history on my '08 is several oil changes. I know much less about the car than I know. I bought it at around 61k miles. I know, the battery had been replaced. The wheels and tires had been replaced. Thats about it. It now has 69k miles and seems perfect, mechanically anyway. No strange sounds. No drips. Shifts great. TPMS seems good and the brake pads are thick. All as it should be on a 69k mile car.
Now I keep reading on here that my shift cables, water pump, clutch and TPMS sensors should have failed 20,000 miles ago. Should I be concerned ? Is it possible that these things will fail any day now Or maybe the first 2 owners were DIY guys and replaced all these things already ?? Opinions ??

Exactly. I have a Lexus at 152k miles and I still don't worry. It sounds as good and looks almost as good as the day I bought it new. I expect my Porsche to have similar equipment reliability.

I always do the normal preventive maintenance and complete the corrective maintenance when stuff fails. Modern cars are very reliable.

Well.......

Don't worry, be happy. I bought my '08 Cayman recently and it had 87K miles. Over the 5 months I've owned it I put on 5K more. I changed the serpentine belt, oil, filter and plugs when I got it. I too read about cables and water pump issues and have decided to let it all just play out. I have a little more history of service than you do but not much more.

Re: Well.......

Well, if you are losing sleep, then either take it to a Porsche mechanic and have him do an inspection, like a pre-purchase inspection, and have him tell you if you need to have this work done, or just have the work done. The important thing is to clear your mind of worry and enjoy your car.

Not losing sleep. Sounds like a good idea but I live in an area with only 2 German car specialists. I also dont see either of them letting a car out of the shop without finding something expensive that needs repaired. Real or imagined.

Re: Well.......

Like others, I do the preventive maintenance you expect to do on a high performance car. But I am not planning to replace the shifter cables or water pump until they fail, IF they fail at all.

How mwny miles ?? I drive mine and dont think much about parts failure. Its only when reading stories on here, I really think about it.

Water pump: you can remove the belt and tug test the pulley for shaft play.
Cables: Random. Nothing you can do. I saw a R at the dealer getting new cables. Less than 5k miles. Probably related to how forceful you move the shifter.
Clutch: Also random. Could go early. Could go later.
TPMS: usually go out at the 5-7 year mark. Not a big deal.
AOS: you can replace it before it fails. Not too hard. And I think it's $100.

Just make sure you have a tow truck coverage. And deal with the problems when they come up.

I have an 07BS with just over 50k, I purchased it 3 years ago with 30k on it, So far I have put tires, one headlight bulb and TPM sensors on it, I changed the oil every year and changed the fluids once. I had similar concerns to yours before heading on a 3000k road trip to the Tail last summer, so I bought a serpentine belt and pondered having the water pump etc. done. My mechanic told me I was crazy so I took his advice and just went as is and all was well.
These things are as well built as/or better built than most other cars, so I ignore the internet negativity and just drive it, if I hear a strange sound I will take it in, until then just regular maintenance for me.

At least I am not the only one, wondering if the timebomb is ticking. I am old school, oil changes every 5000 miles. Due for it again, next week. In the spring I will have some time to look at things like the belt and hoses and I will replace if they look tired. As for the rest, I think guys are more likely to post up when something goes wrong than when thigs are going great.
As for being told you are crazy, I get that a lot and not just from mechanics.:hilarious:

Cars are pretty reliable... had a 987.1 and 987.2 now... someone mentioned tow truck service and I +1 that... so many things are DIYs and the parts are relatively cheap (go figure)... just have a low profile jack or some ramps, and a decent tool set... I had the cables snap on my 987.2 at 40K, but my 987.1 had way more mileage... you cant worry about all the small stuff, just enjoy the car

My 2006 CS just crossed 45,000 miles. My wife and I have put 10,000 miles on it since we bought it. Nothing has failed, lots of preventative maintenance.

I agree about just doing routine maintenance. Since you mention only oil changes, that means you are due for plugs, belt, air filter, brake fluid. Do these and sleep well.

Ive done all but the belt and plugs. Car runs perfect. No way it needs plugs. I am sure its had more than oil changes but the question is how much more. Since the first owner had warranty service, I am guessing the second was a DIY guy and that will not show up on Carfax. No way the car went this long on just oil changes.
