Since the GT4 is (supposedly or marketed as) being built as a homologation entry for FIA GT4 competition, when will we see the actual race car? Lotus has been showing a GT4 Evora, and KTM has recently announced a trick X-BOW GTR coupe GT4 entrant, I'm anxious to see the Porsche Motorsport Cayman GT4.

Will it race in 2015?

Looks like there will be a 981 in FIA GT4 this year! No mention of it being a GT4 though.

"February 19, 2015 - PROsport Performance is currently finishing its newly built Porsche 981 Cayman SP and its preparation is well underway to enter the 2015 GT4 European Series. The Porsche specialist from the German town Herschbroich conducts its first test in the end of February."

Wouldn't it be a Cayman GT4 Cup?

See Porsche eyes entry-level GT racer - GT news - AUTOSPORT.com The purpose of the car is to allow teams to cheaply enter racing without spending huge sums for the GTE teams. The car is called GT4 for a reason, to run in the GT4 series.
Sure, but there's a 911 GT3 and then there's the GT3 Cup which is meant only for the track. When Porsche says they're working on a track-only variant of the GT4, I kinda expect the same deal.

GT3, like the GT4, is not a race car. It's a street legal production model that allows the car maker to homogulate race cars. The cup car IS a race car that Porsche sells its customers and does sponsor, or there are series, for just Cup Cars to race, all being more or less equal. This is different than the 991RSR cars meant to run in WEC. I believe that since the reference article, Kristen talked about GT4 racing, that meant exactly what it said, GT4 racing. Can the build and sponsor a GT4 Cup Car series? Sure. Will they? Dunno.

I think I'm still confused. :D So you don't consider the GT3 Cup to be the track-only equivalent for the 911? I know there are levels above that like the 991RSR, but I thought the Cup version was sort of the entry-level track-only car.

I said that. I wrote: The cup car IS a race car that Porsche sells its customers

edit. The GT3 or GT3RS are not race cars. They are street legal, track oriented production vehicles.

Right. But track-oriented != track-only. That's what I get from the wording they used. When Porsche says track-only, I expect they mean a race car.

You might want to tell that to the 475 upcoming GT4 buyers whose cars will never see a track and will sit in a garage or be driven every day rather than the 125 cars that will be driven as intended. No, the GT3 is nowhere near a real race car.

Cup car. No pdk. Sequential gear box ...

I feel like you and I are not having the same conversation. :D

Porsche has announced a track-only variant of the GT4, to be officially announced sometime this year. Isn't that what this thread is about? Not the GT4 we all know about that people are ordering now.

OK, i am confused. Yes, from day one Porsche said the purpose of building the production car was to be able to go racing in GT4 (or presumably GT4).

Is there a Porsche sponsored GT4 cup car races yet? Not that I know of

Is there GT4 race series. Yes.

What happens from there? Dunno

This is just conjecture, not official, and only something I pray for... but if you're in the United States, you would hope to see a Cayman Cup Car being raced in IMSA where we raced for over a decade and won the Driver's Championship with the 997.2 GTS. That 997 car is legal this year but is about to get phased out as they no longer even produce it and rules will prohibit you from running a discontinued model for only so man years. Maybe the car would be legal in World Challenge where I got the DFI 987.2 classified for GTS competition in 2011, which would be another dream come true. Hopefully even PCA will make a home for the car. Overseas the car would most likely run in the GT4 class where it has less motor and requires less platform than the GT3 cars which are for higher level teams with better budgets. I guess the big question is will there be a 1 make Cayman Cup car series?! Only time will tell but the tides are turning and they are answering the call.

It's a tag team effort!
Hey... that's what *I* said in the first place!! It'll be the Cayman GT4 Cup!! Or will it just be Cayman Cup, without the GT4 in the middle? Is that where I went wrong? :D
