Hi all :)

At 93k the clutch has started slipping on my Cayman. I was going to replace it myself (never done this before, however looks quite straightforward from seeing some tutorial videos!) and while I'm at it I was going to replace the dual-mass flywheel.

From what I gather the DMF is recommended to be changed on every 2nd clutch change. Mine is on it's first clutch however given the high mileage I'd quite like to do the DMF for peace of mind.

But I can only find it online for over £1,000, which seems excessive! The local indi quoted an extra £400 to fit a new DMF on top of £1k for the clutch, so I'll see if they can order me one in if I can't find it to purchase myself cheaper.

FYI the clutch kit is available for £160, plus £100 to hire a ramp for the day and £100 for a few tools etc, so would save a fair chunk over getting the clutch done, however the cost of the DMF tipps the equation the wrong way!

Any pointers?

Yes, you're correct on the 9a1 engine.

Considering the DMF for other 987's can be had for around £350, forking out ofer £1,000 seems a bit hard to swallow!

I've found a lightweight AASCO single mass flywheel for £460, however seem to see contrasting feedback.... various people saying it's fine whilst others say that the lack of damping will lead to a damaged crankshaft (with lots of claims of having seen other peoples crankshaft break due to this, but nobody reporting it themselves...)

There is the option of a used one via [email protected] Perhaps not. I searched and only found new flywheels of questionable source. Lots of 3.4L flywheels available, used or new.

Thanks Voyager, yes I'd rather replace with a new one! What do you mean by 'questionable source'. Thanks for the part numbers, I'll have a look!
The local porsche independent says he can get a LUK one in for approx £400, so am tempted to get him to do this with the clutch for about £1,400 rather than faffing around with it myself!

However I haven't found any LUK flywheels for the 2.9 6 speed... I have emailed them to see if they do produce one!

I won't purchase any part from an [email protected] dealer with less than 99 percent feedback rating. Years ago that number meant something. [email protected] changed the rules over 10 years ago and everyone now has a high 90 percent score. Seller feedback retaliation, time limits on which to give a feedback and limiting the score to some limited time in the past has hurt the value of the feedback rating as [email protected] wants to protect their vendors.

In the [email protected] Porsche parts area there are an increasing number of vendors who put the entire Porsche parts catalog up for sale as new parts and charge 35% to 150% more than list. I view them as vultures, taking advantage of people who can't do an internet search to find what the real price is. These vendors cannot have the stock in hand and likely just order from a real Porsche dealer and have it drop shipped to the buyer.

On the used parts front, I usually limit ordering large dollar value parts from just a few vendors, over and over again , as I have developed a trust with them and have received good parts at a good price, delivered quickly. Lower price stuff, I will take a chance on. I have been looking to upgrade my Boxster's speakers from base to Bose. Porsche puts a different connector design on each type of speaker. Over the last year, I found used Bose door wiring harnesses for $50 each. They retail about $550 each, new. In those cases, I didn't care who the seller was as the cost was so low and both harnesses were delivered in good shape.

Thanks V6, good to know.

FYI I spoke with LUK, who confirmed they actually supply most of the OE Dual Mass Flywheels for Porsche, however this part has not been released as an aftermarket component.

So basically, you can only get it from Porsche or someone who has bought it from Porsche, so there seems to be no shortcut on the price. No scheduled public release date for this.

Shame!

If your old flywheel is not excessively scored, there should be people out there that can resurface the clutch-mating surface.

Note: use new crankshaft mounting bolts. The bolts have a dry thread locker applied that is lost if the bolts are re-used. They are not that expensive.
