You got a whine for the day? This is you place to put it.

-------------

So today we went to one of those family restaurant parks. You know these places - they are all over America. There were multiple choices. We went to the first one with only a few people seated, went to the receptionist (after waiting a few minutes for her to show up), and she said it would be 10 minutes. The entire place was empty except for maybe three tables.

Being ingrained in the society of INSTANT GRATIFICATION, yes even I have succumbed to the societal norm, I thought. Huh? You do realize I can just walk next door and WALK IN???? And so we did go virtually next door and were immediately seated. This was a place where you could order breakfast 24/7. And so we did. And ...

  • the bacon was burnt to a crisp
  • the sausage links burnt
  • the hash browns BURNT
My wife will not put up with this and sent her food back. I tend to be more laid back (amazingly enough). The food comes back and ...

  • the bacon was still burnt to a crisp
  • the toast was black burnt
It's Breakfast. How hard can this be? So we paid and left. We have come to the conclusion that no one wants to work anymore or take little pride in their work.

The sad thing is, this doesn't just happened once in a while. It happens MOST of the time. Sure, these were family restaurants. We were not at a $150 dinner for two place but still. That is my whine for the day.

Ha! Great Rant, I agree that customer service is a luxury these days. I'd blame it on Milenials inability to communicate thru anything more than a 4x2 screen but sadly it permeates all age groups. Two things;

1st; Don't ever send food back, if it's crap don't eat it, and don't pay for it. If you send it back it's always a risky proposition

2nd; These restaurants use the lowest quality of everything, food, cleaning supplies and employees. Try to avoid them whenever you can, they are major contributors to diabetes....

My rant would be against Porsche Itself and its lack of information on some of their middle options such as my CDR Plus system. It is on the original invoice yet I don't have rear speakers (I finally pulled off the grills and saw there is nothing there) I have all the other features of the CDR Plus except the rear speakers. What's worse is that it appears that I can't even put any in according to one of the OEM dealers. What is up with that???

I believe in the mediocrity principle. That is, most experiences will be mediocre, by definition. Exceptional experiences are statistical outliers.

As for the kids these days; things aint like they used to be, and maybe they never were.

OK--my rant of the day. Some medical problems last month. 'Just saw the billing. The hospital charged $19,000. Medicare granted them about $900, at which point they're probably still making at least some profit. To get back, the hospital makes sure they engage in no contracts with any insurance companies regarding drug costs (Part D insurance for you old guys who know this stuff). That allows the hospital to charge absolutely anything for drugs. They charge me $207 for 5 pills. The insurance company explains I have to pay it because they (the Part D insurance company) has no agreement whatever (about drug costs) with the hospital. I ask the insurance company what the pills were worth, e.g., if the hospital (like every regular pharmacy) did have an agreement with them. The insurance company touts up the total. "Sir, instead of paying $207.08, if you had gotten these pills from any other place they would have cost $6.50. My rant.

The mediocrity principle..I like that. I really am not being the "get off my lawn..." Old man. I love technology (I work in the field analytics actually) but I Joke about how my kids are hopelessly addicted to it. I told my 14 year old that I won't simply just thank him for his service to his country IN CALL OF DUTY!

The nice thing is that being a Porsche owner you should be an outlier!

Good point. It seems to be getting worse though. No one wants to work and they seem to not take pride in their work. They would rather just hang around the back, talk, and play on their phones. Then they wonder why they are broke but want to buy a BMW - or I should say Lease one.

'Sounds like you're not 65 yet. Here's how it works: when a hospital signs on to Medicare (and I think they pretty much all do), they are forced to accept what Medicare deems the appropriate fee. 80% of that appropriate fee is paid by the government. That's what we've been paying into all these years. (When you turn 65, you do have to add a bit over $100 a month to be part of Medicare in addition to all the money you paid in when you were younger.)

The remaining 20% is paid by Medigap. Medigap is private and you have to pay for it out of pocket for that insurance. You don't have to get it, but pretty much everyone does. It's not terribly expensive. Between the 80% covered by Medicare and the 20% covered by Medigap, it's all paid for (except for a small deductible covered pretty quickly by your first medical expenses each year). The hospital eats ALL of the rest of $19000. Before you feel too sorry for the hospital, they billed well over $13,000 for 45 minutes of use of the room the surgery was done in. (Medicare said it was worth something like $1100--which I thought was plenty generous--of which they paid 80% and my Medigap company paid all of the remaining 20%.) Also, as stated above, hospitals have found a way to legally vastly overcharge for drugs administered while you're hospitalized. (For all other drugs, you have to buy your own insurance called "Part D," which isn't terribly expensive and unlike Medigap, can vary greatly in terms of what it does and doesn't cover--meaning which drugs are or are not covered.) Got it?

And Today's Whine ...

Ever watch TV and there is "BREAKING NEWS" and "NEWS ALERT"? It used to mean something, maybe a natural disaster, maybe some big national news happened.

Today - the cable news networks have BREAKING NEWS and NEWS ALERT constantly streaming across their shows.

Here's a hint. If everything is tagged with Breaking News and ALERT, then none of it is important.

I will whine a little today about "me first drivers" It really annoys me when people use a freeway on ramp/off ramp combination over a cross street as a traffic signal bypass. They are so impatient they can't even wait for a few minutes at a traffic signal.

If you get behind one of these numbskulls while you are trying to get up to 70 MPH so you can merge into freeway traffic you are stuck because they are only going 45 MPH. Then there are the ones that turn their right turn signal on like that fixes everything.

The same thing happens when you are trying to use the off ramp and you come across one of these nimrods. You are waiting for them to speed up or slow down to merge onto the freeway but nooooo. By the time you figure out what is going on you have almost missed the off ramp and have to perform an "innovative driving stunt" just to use the off ramp.
:soapbox:

I don't wish to belittle what has been said in relation to customer service, as it is all relative to expectations. But you should really experience the 'service' we get here in the UK. I visit the US at least once a year and believe me, you are miles ahead in terms of looking after the customer.

To get back on topic though, my whine is when is fuc*ing summer going to arrive here in Britain!! :(

Daughter going to a concert at Dolby Theater (Kodak Theatre) today. I live in OC and it's 50 miles one way so it's too far to drop them off, go home, then come back to pick them up. I will have to spend 3 to 4 hours hopping from coffee shop to coffee shop waiting for them in LA.

I heard Summer in Britain is going to fall on a weekday this year, which will result in most people missing it, because they'll probably be working that day.

I believe this is because tipping is customary in the US, and somewhat rare in the UK. I spent four months in Chester and I got bad service everywhere. Who knows, maybe they just hated my accent :)

Most of US media (by most I'm pretty sure all) is a freaking joke anyway. When the Panama leak happened, I went to CNN, MSNBC, Foxnews and NYtimes. Not one of those had anything on their front page (BBC did). All the US news outlets had was some BS about Trump, some pony stuck in a ditch etc. The lowest common denominator has a two minute attention span and needs their "news" to entertain them. All you need to do is tune into any of the local radio stations and listen to the idiots for a couple minutes and feel your grey cells committing suicide.

At Costco today, found a nice protected parking spot - but came back to this:
IMG_20160417_135838.jpg IMG_20160417_135844.jpg

You can barely see a little white-space between the hitch and my bumper (about 1/16th"). Amazingly - not a scratch. The D.Bag was still sitting in the POS extended-cab w/camper when I got there- chatting on the phone - totally ignoring me. I wonder - do these rigs have a vid cam in the hitch? Was he just F-ing with me? Since there was no actual contact, I just loaded-up the frunk and went on my way.
