I assume you have a 6-speed manual? If you do then starting in 2nd gear will put additional wear on the clutch since you'll need more revs and time with the clutch slipping to get the car moving.

The engine won't care unless you're really bogging it down to the point of almost stalling.

A Tiptronic or PDK will normally (correct me if I'm wrong) start in 2nd gear unless you really floor it.

Yeah, my PDK starts in 1st from a dead stop, but sometimes on a rolling stop it will still be in 2nd. Since the PDK clutches (yeah, there are 2) are lubricated, this is not a real wear issue. I heard that the Tiptronic starts in 2nd unless you're in manual mode.
