Air Bag light

I went out for a drive today with no passenger and my airbag light came on intermittently. I stopped the car, turned off the engine and got out to take weight of the seat. Started the car up again and it continued to light up intermittently. I stopped at a store for a 1/2 hour and it continued as I drove home. I didn’t see any codes on the reader. I made sure that neither seat back is jammed up against the bulkhead, which I read can cause the airbag light to go on. Later I went out with my wife and it was the same, so I think it’s the driver’s seat.

Any suggestions?

EXCELLENT! Was almost exactly what I was going to reply.. KISS sometimes works. And I love your SIG - you have the right designation for your 2.9L..

Not sure how Porsche works, but in both of my previous BMW's, there's a sensor mat in the seat cushion that determines if the seat is occupied and the weight of the occupant. This would determine if and at what force the airbag is deployed. This went bad in both my e46 and e90.

Let's hope that's not your issue because it is $$$.

1 liter bottle under the passenger seat. That seemed to fix it. Thanks for all the advice!

I went for a long drive and the airbag light is still coming on intermittently, particularly on hard left hand turns. I’ll have to explore more under the seats. Sigh.

My car has been sitting at the Porsche Dealership for 2 months waiting for a passenger seat occupancy sensor. Apparently it’s a common problem. So common they did a recall for the Macans. Unfortunately there are no spare parts available and won’t be for several months at least. Hope that isn’t your issue as well.

Thanks for this info. Very helpful. I’m tempted to remove the passenger seat and/or the connections but that will set off the airbag light permanently. Does anyone know if I disconnect the battery before fiddling with the seat whether that will avoid setting off the light?

I had an airbag light issue on my daughter's 2008 Beetle. The cause turned out to be a broken wire in the driver's seat belt latch assembly. I repaired the wire and was able to reset the light.
I don't know if this is also a possible cause of this issue in a Boxster.

It’s the drivers side buckle, code 002004 “Driver’s Belt Buckle open circuit”. Anyone know how to replace it? I assume it’s
  • disconnect the battery, wait 30 minutes
  • unbolt seat
  • detach electrical connections
  • unbolt buckle,

what was it that Clymer and Haynes used to say? Assembly is the reverse of disassembly. But that never really helped.

-reattach electrical connections
- bolt buckle

  • torque buckle bolt to?
  • torque seat bolts to?
I’m looking for a diagram of how the buckle is attached to the seat.
