well, when I had my tire changed (puncture) I thought why not fill it with nitrogen, which I did to all 4, and since it cost me about $4 it is of no problem

A good car will get you from point A to point B. A great car... will just get you into trouble!

You need two valve stems on opposite sides of your tire to properly fill with Nitrogen. That is the only way you can purge all of the air from the tire. The guys selling Nitrogen will still take your money, of course.

Any of you guys ever buy a propane tank and have it filled for the first time?

I guess you never have to check your tire pressure when you use nitrogen? Why would you? If you are a bit low, what are you going to do? Add AIR?:eek::eek:

Nitrogen is snake oil.

Everyone knows that N-rated 80/20 Krypton/Argon is what you need if you are serious about owning a performance vehicle like a Porsche. Tequipment sells it for $39.95 a can... good for two tires. Air will void your warranty.

80/20 KA is Nitroscopic. If your tire is punctured, it will actually suck air in through the hole and create a plasma contact-patch that seals the opening.

Well when I did it, the guys at the shop had a machine that fills the tire with nitrogen then drains it like 3 or 4 times so that when they finally inflate, its all nitro (at least that's what they said)

That is something to consider!!

Ok Dave - quit sucking in the new posters. For all you newbies out there, Dave is a manager for a Formula One team and holds a degree in nuclear physcology. He sometimes exaggerates a bit - air inside will NOT void your warrantly. Only air on the outside. C'mon Dave.

Nitro - you're no newbie! I looked at your pictures added stat, or whatever, when I replied - but didn't see that you had 200 plus posts! You're about as old as Dave in poster years!;)

Exaggerate? It was a pure fabrication. LOL.

The two valve stem thing is true, though.

Okay, this is funny. Nice one, Dave! :D

Nitrogen the latest scam

I was amused to see this sign at my Porsche dealer the other day. Touting the value of filling your tires with $100 worth of Nitrogen.

Now keep in mind the atmosphere is already 78% nitrogen, but here's what adding that extra 22% more nitrorgen is going to give you...

1) Better Fuel Mileage (I'd love to see the numbers on that probably infantesimal)

2) Longer Tire Life (You're going to wear out the tread before you have to worry about casing breaking down inside from standard air)

3) Improved Handling (Can you tell which Porsche is filled with Nitrogen in the tires I'm willing to be nobody could)

4) Environmentally Friendly (To create, ship and recycle all those bottles of Nitrogen vs, just pumping in air)

5) Smoother Ride (see #3)

6) Superior Pressure Retention (Perhaps)

7) No oxidation (My brand new Porsche OEM aluminum rims with clear coat aren't oxidizing that fast last I checked, but technically I guess they could over a thousand years)

8) Safety, peace of mind (Nitrogen is safer? The peace of mind of being ripped off)

Hey anything can technically be considered 'better' to something else, but it's so negligible it's insane.

I could make a similar argument that vacuuming your carpets makes your car lighter and thus improves fuel consumption, handling, extends the life of the car and is enivronmentally friendly.

Re: Nitrogen the latest scam

You forgot to highlight the "F1 Technology" bit.

If F1 uses it, it must be faster, right? :) :) :)

Bottled nitrogen can maintain slightly more even tire pressures because it is drier than regular air, but that's about it. Suckering someone into paying $100 for this is pretty darn low.

they sell windshield washer booster fluid

Re: Nitrogen the latest scam

Nitrogen, bah! Everyone knows you need to be using the right air for the season!

Seasonal Tire Air [1cas] - $29.95 : KaleCoAuto, Hard to find automotive items!

Everyone knows that temperature can have a great impact in your tire pressure. This is why you absolutely should use the correct air for your tires! For example, your car should usually have the tires set to 32psi. If you are using summer air in the summer, this is fine. However! If you use this summer air in the dead of winter, your may actually only be running at about 22psi! Each can will do one average sized tire. Sold in sets of 1 each.

Note: lest you think I am spamming, I promise you, I get no commission from the sale of this product!

Re: Nitrogen the latest scam

i realize porsche and its dealers are having a tough go right about now, but a hundred bucks for nitrogen is nuts.

fools with money, beware.

Re: Nitrogen the latest scam

Well for me it's a bit personal. My girlfriend took her VW GTI in for service and they told her they offered Nitrogen in the tires and she said "Do I need that?" And they said, well it is better. So she goes okay and got it. When I went in with her to pick up the car I said "You know that's a scam and her car doesn't need it. You take that Nitrogen out right now and delete that charge on the bill or I am going to go nuts!"

By the way, at VW they only charge $60 for Nitrogen. :D

Re: Nitrogen the latest scam

So, do they evacuate all the air from the tires before refilling with nitrogen?

Aren't the teams now using exotic gases in F1 (nitrogen is so 1995?)

Is pure summer air cooler than winter air, to help maintain even pressures?
