Foxwell NT530 - new user info and questions

Hey everyone,

Got a Foxwell NT530 for xmas (thank you wife!) and have been playing with it a bit. I could now answer some of the questions I had with the device, and I wanted to provide a little info on activation as well.

First off, activation - mine came from Amazon, and the Porsche software was already loaded to it (showed up on the screen). The first step is activating the reader, and updating it if needed. There are no instructions provided on this, so I just tried a few things to get it done. There's probably a manual online, but you'd think such basic stuff would be included on paper or something... it wasn't in my case (though there was a "VERY IMPORTANT" message paper in there, which basically said to contact them for support. Yeesh.

For activation, I don't recall the exact steps, but You need to get the FoxAssist software, create a login, then you get to its main screen. Once there, connect the reader via USB to a computer, then put it into "Update" mode... this seems to simply allow the computer to access the SD card. Once connected, you can then run the update process which basically updates the SD card with new files via their software.

Somewhere along the way, I did have to "activate" the device... I think I did that before the above. When connected, the device's serial number popped up on a screen - I basically copy/pasted that into the activation section, and that made it happy. The software ought to do this automatically, but whatever... it wasn't too complicated to figure out.

Regarding the device itself, I had some questions about what it could do, so here's what I found out. First off, these options are all found within the Porsche section of the reader. Once there, I use the SmartVIN function to identify the vehicle, then I can go into the Diagnosis or Programming subsections. I apologize if my breadcrumb-mapping to the entries is not perfect - they're easy enough to find once you're in the right area, but I'm happy to correct if needed.

Here's what I've done so far:
1) I wanted the car to lock the doors when you started moving - this can be done in the "key" section (Programming/PAS)... each key has it's own settings. I enabled the setting for "locking when speed >5 kph" (about 3mph)... this works great and locks the doors (you can hear it and the red LED on the central locking lights up. One downside is that there doesn't appear to be a way to auto-unlock when you pull the key... so it can be a little surprising when you try to open the door handle and nothing happens (pull again, or you can press the button to unlock). Does anyone know of an auto-unlock feature I can enable?

2) I saw some questions about whether you can read oil temperature over CANBUS. On my 2010, you can... and this is seen on the NT530 as well. Go into Diagnosis/Control Modules/DME/Live Data/Temperatures. In there you can show the sensor voltage and/or the actual converted temperature. Very cool... I've always wondered how long oil takes to come up to temp (relative to the coolant temp, for example)... now I can find out. You can also plot a short graph of the data in this screen (only about 24 seconds total from what I can see, though there appears to be a SAVE function which may save data to the SD card?) Anyway, the reason I care about this is because everyone says to wait until the car is warmed up before getting on it... but no one can tell you how to know if you're warmed up or not! I hope to figure this out and report back...

3) I was hoping to enable a horn when I locked the doors. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem possible (unless someone can point me in the right direction?). I saw a few posts where people went into the rear module, then set the "acoustic alarm output" to "Siren" instead of horn/none (default on mine)... but this can throw an error and cause the REAR module to lose comms with the NT530, which has to then be "fixed" with Durametric... so I didn't want to try that. In subsequent findings, this didn't work anyway... but I'd love to be able to have a horn to know I locked the vehicle (since we only have one lock/unlock button on the FOB). I know there's an aftermarket device that does this, but it seems crazy that we can't do this by programming.

4) I disabled the seatbelt chime on the drivers side. I always wear my seatbelt, but when I go from my mailbox to the garage (about 400 feet) the incessant, loud dinging is annoying... disabling the Programming/POSIP entry for "Belt Buckle Driver Side" prevents the car from even looking at that sensor, which disables the ding.

5) Since everyone asks, yes this device can read overrevs. They are located in Diagnosis/Control Modules/DME/Special Function/Vehicle Data. While in here, you can see the vehicle's "total distance" in kms. Mine is within 132 miles of the odo, so I figure I'm fine... but it's a good thing to check on a used car, I'd imagine. In my case, it showed 127788 km = 79404 mi, odo shows 79536, for reference.

6) I tried to enable the mirror lowering function on the passenger mirror (Programming/Passenger Door) but it doesn't seem to work. I think I read that this only works if you have seat memory and/or mirror memory enabled. Is this something I can enable myself (and it will just work?) or does it require hardware I don't have (I don't have memory seats)? I didn't want to just turn it on and have it fail to communicate (like the REAR module can do as noted in #3 above).

So, I have a few questions. To repeat the ones above:
1) Is there an auto-unlock feature I can activate, so when the key is pulled the doors unlock automatically?
2) Is there a way to get a horn sound when you lock the doors with the key?
3) Is there a way to get mirror lowering to work without memory-seats?
4) New question - while looking around in there, I went into Programming/PAS/Coding Adaptations/Basic Coding and saw that my car is showing "Automatic Transmission" here. Everything in the car seems to work, but this seems odd... any ideas on what this does or why it might be wrong?
5) Second new question - in a few places, the vehicle type shows "---" instead of the Boxster 987 that I have... is this normal? I can dig into where this was again (I forget at the moment)... but it seems weird?

Great info, thanks. I took that and ran with it a bit further. At least on my car, today, I watched the oil temp as I drove (via the Foxwell) and kept asking for the oil level measurement. Thankfully, since I have a manual, it would take the reading if I was rolling as long as the engine was at idle (ie, clutched in)... so I could repeat the message as I drove (city speeds). I ended up getting to my destination and the coolant temp was at 175 on the dash for maybe a minute or so before it would allow me to take a reading. The Foxwell said this was about 73C (= 163F) for oil temperature.

Elsewhere, I had read that the ECU considers the engine "warmed up" to do an oil measurement at 155F (=68C)...

I posted more detail on the other thread where we were talking about engine warmup and such... it's in the 981 section, but I think that discussion is still somewhat relevant: car warmup

Most welcome Schwinn. 😊

I didn't know there was such a thing until I wanted to check the oil level one day while driving my kid to school.
I sorta know now the rough distance (on school days about a mile and a half and 8 minutes no thanks to crappy traffic) that I have to travel before the engine gets nice and warm in our very hot (typically 86-90°F) and humid (80+%) climate.
I'm the kinda guy the enjoys reading the car manual over and over trying to see if I can dig up something new each time that I might have missed before.

Cheers!

One more little piece of info I learned... the manual actually tells you what "warmed up" is on the engine oil. Here's p157 of my 2010 manual:
Image

Apparently, Porsche believes 140F is warmed up for oil. Since I've seen the "not warmed up" message even when the dash shows 175F on the coolant, I have to assume this means it's watching the oil temp. I hope to check this with the Foxwell just to see if that confirms it... but the manual reference is good to know! :)

That's not an issue. I'm considering moving this thread over to the Diagnostics forum.. since the NT530 isn't just for 987's.

Well, I got my PIWIS and managed to get the car out of Transport Mode.
I then went in to play with fire and burnt myself big time.
Now, my PDK and Gateway modules are unprogrammed. 😂
Will update when I get an external power supply going for the car so that I can program it.

Oh my!

Does the PIWIS have a function to record all the current settings before messing about with a module?

Decided to move this thread over to the diagnostics forum, since we can use more input on NT530 experiences from owners of models besides the 987...

Hang on.. I'll leave a permanent redirect..

Ordered from AliExpress a MST-80+ 100amp voltage regulator to keep the juice flowing while I try to reprogram the modules.

Should be arriving on 19th Jul.

Meanwhile, I checked this oldish thread from 911uk.com which seems to have the solution.

Will try that out and update everyone once the power regulator arrives.

Quick update:

Borrowed a voltage regulator from my indie workshop and plugged in the car (I couldn't wait for the delivery of the unit I purchased 😂)

I was able to get the gateway back but no way in hell was Sid gonna give up so easily.

Ended up having to get the car towed to my indie. He had to get a PIWIS that was able to go online to grab the codes via VIN apparently from Porsche's PPN.

Expensive lesson.

After taking the car back, I realised that I've lost Sports and Sports Plus modes (Sid came with Sports Chrono Pack).

Guess another trip to my indie is required as I've tried everything from handover to coding the Chrono control module, stopwatch, PSM and realised that under Vehicle Electronics, there's an Activate Sports Mode option and requires a 16 digit code which I don't have.

Oh well.

Such is life but I did get Sid with the intention of working on the car to learn more about it and as a hobby.

At least I can drive the car now. 😂

As I'm currently testing a prototype function for the NT530  I'm a bit hesitant after reading your story, A9872namedSid. Rather I'm testing the PDK calibration routine on my 981 S. Last time it went into limp mode but after a restart and cleaning all error codes it works normally again. Is it possible to damage the PDK with the NT530? Your problems arose upon using a PIWIS clone, correct?

Hi @SwissCayman,

To be honest, I don't really know what kind of damage the NT530 can or would do, but it's definitely better than using a PIWIS Clone.

But I think you'd be much safer with the Foxwell NT530 than you would with PIWIS.

However, if you're a Registered Porsche Service Center, naturally, PIWIS would be the go to since it can and does connect back to the Porsche Partner Network (a.k.a. PPN) so if you do mess up anything, it's easily reverted.

That being said, unfortunately, I was misled when I bought the car as the seller informed me that it was from the local authorised dealer but I later found out that it was a grey unit originating from the UK.

Unfortunately, recently, Porsche Singapore has stopped adopting grey units (previously they could be adopted for approx US$7100) so I have no choice but to either go to indie workshops (that probably also use a form of PIWIS that isn't registered) or DIY, hence my cloned PIWIS.

One thing though, if you're not having major issues with your PDK, why recalibrate it? It's usually done if components have been replaced or programming has been changed due to complaints.

FYI, I did a complete PDK swap with a 3.4l S Boxster and didn't code or calibrate anything and it works fine.

Perhaps resetting it (see attached pic) would do?

Hi all,

Quick question - I've scanned countless threads but seem to get mixed messages. So apologies if this has been done to death...

I've bought an nt530 with the intention of disabling the rear spoiler in the up position.

In the nt530 menu -> vehicle electrical system section I set the rear spoiler to 'not installed' (after I manually raised the spoiler). This seemed to disable the button and the spoiler was up... Success - i figured it had worked as expected. When I arrived at work today I noticed the spoiler had lowered itself (yet the manual spoiler button remains disabled). Is what I'm trying to achieve not possible? Ive read multiple posts where people talk about coding out or fixing the spoiler but no one has mentioned the wording 'not installed' which makes me think I'm doing something wrong or in the wrong place?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I suspect something is built into the ECU telling it when the ignition is off - the car isn't being driven - so the spoiler (if raised) should be closed. I rather doubt this can be programmed around.

BTW - how about visiting New Member Introductions and introduce yourself and your car (photos are wonderful, we love photos..)

Meanwhile, welcome to Planet-9, the Friendly Porsche Forum..

In my usage of the NT530, I have found that various settings appear in multiple locations, so there may be some other places to look for the spoiler functionality. In other words, you found the setting for the button, but there may be other places where the car is also looking to see if it should lower it at startup, as Don suggested.

Another idea - I might suggest raising it, then unplugging the connector to it... this way it's completely disabled and can't possibly move. I imagine there's a connector somewhere "accessible" to do this?

don't mean to be a thread bandit but....I have a new NT530 and find that it is not particularly intuitive when navigating. I had a hell of a time resetting the Service Needed notifications. I finally got it but....does anyone have a good link to an owner's manual. With the parent company in China there is no customer #800 for support. TIA dlb

#53 ·
The support is probably the biggest drawback to the NT530.. but so far that's true of all the Chinese diagnostics tools I've used. Unless they have a US distributor you can expect very slow and not terribly good support. While a user manual would be a wonderful thing - the software changes enough and frequently enough that it would be difficult to keep the manual up to date. Something like a WIKI or FAQ for using it would be a wonderful thing.

Might I suggest posting your comment in the NT530-specific diagnostics forum: Tool Review: - Foxwell NT530 - new user info and questions - so we can keep the knowledge we gain on using the tool somewhere that people can find it.

I'm merging the spoiler thread with the NT530 specific thread in the diagnostics forum. I think it better belongs there..

Hang on.. (please keep hands and feet inside the thread for your comfort and safety. Do not attempt to exit the thread while it's in motion..)

Does anyone know if it is possible to transfer the registration on an NT530 to another user? I purchased an Autel tool, and may no longer need the NT530, so I am thinking of selling it cheap, as it will just sit in a drawer and never get used by me. I used it once and it didn't do what I needed. I also have a Durametric, so I won't need 3 tools. I just don't know if updates will be supported by a second user/owner.

#56 ·
I don't see why not. Or, easier still, if you simply update the password on your Foxwell account, and give that to the new buyer, they can use your existing login and such?

You could ask Foxwell if there is a way to un-register your device (or checkout the website).

In the end, the actual device will work without changing registrations. The only thing you need the reg for is if you want support or to download new software?

#58 ·
Yeah, but you should be able to change the email address and such within the account... so you don't have to be associated with it. The new user can make those changes as well... i would expect.

Just poke around the site and see what they let you do... I'm sure it will be easy and obvious.

Is it possible to change the oil change service interval using the NT530? On my 987.2 it's set to 12k miles or 560ish days (1.5 years?). I'd like to change it to 6k miles or 365 days. I was able to do this on my GTI using a VAGcom cable.

Thanks,

Chris

Chris - good question, my answer - dunno, but probably. I have to update my NT530, then hook it up to the car and play with it a bit.. there was something else I promised to look at for someone and Covid and inertia-of-the-*** have kept me from doing it. FWIW - my interval is 10k miles and 365 days (dunno how it handles leap year..) Certainly the car has the ability since there are different change intervals depending on what country the car is sold in (supposed to account for harder use and different qualities of fuel.)
