Leather Dashboard treatment

I have the extended leather dashboard (black) and was wondering what product members are using to keep this area clean and protected from the hot sun. My Porsche salesman said he has see's Porsche's taken on trade that are several years old without any damage to the leather and knows the owners were not really using any conditioners. He did say the Ferrari's and Maserati's leather dashboards do not hold up well.

Don't use anything that will make your dash shine. The reflection will aggravate you to death. I use a damp cloth to clean my dash. I don't put anything on it but my car isn't out in the sun all day so the dash doesn't dry out. If I am going to put something on my seats or doors I use Lexol leather care products.

Today after 2 years of ownership and 13k miles, I am going to use a California brush to remove the dust on the dash.
Report later on how well it works.-Richard

The only product I've used in the last four years. My car lives outside in the South Florida sun....... I don't have a leather dashboard, but my seats are. Leather and direct sun is not a good combination.

Gliptone Leather Care | Leather Cleaner

They're out of the UK, online ordering only, best product for leather I've ever tried. After 43K miles my seats aren't creased.

It may be obvious but I will err on the side of that.........I live in South Florida and anytime my car is going to sit in the sun for more than just a few minutes, I use the sun visor. The fitted one from Porsche is not all that expensive and does a nice job of pretty much keeping the sun off of the dash. If you do this, your dash will only be exposed when actually driving. I would imagine that this will protect it and add years of useful life to it.

I bought a black towel (black interior) and keep it over my black trunk carpeting, keeps rug from fading, when towel gets faded I just replace. I don't like window tints.

I won't go into too much detail, but here are some quick tips.

All modern day leather is coated, taking care of leather is very easy. All modern day leather is coated, to protect from dyes, soil, and staining. The leather we have is semi-alinine, look it up.

As routine maintenance, I like to take a Swiffer dust pad and gently wipe the surface. This will cling all the pollen and light dusting that occurs (more so on a Boxster). Then take a damp microfiber cloth and wipe it down with water. That's it. The water will hydrate the leather.

Twice a year, you want to use a water based leather cleaner. I would recommend the Leather Master's kit: Leather Master Car Leather Protection & Cleaner Kit, Leather Master Ink Away Ink Remover, ink lifter, leather cleaner, leather protection

Leather conditioner is basically a marketing gimmick, the leather is already coated so there is no way any conditioner actually seeps into the pores. An oil based conditioner will simply sit on top of the coating, attracting dust and causing friction between yourself and the seat leading to premature wear.

What you need is UV protection on the leather and areas like the dashboard can shrink over time if it isn't protected to UV or hydrated. You can use 303 Aerospace or Optimum Protectant Plus for this.

Another all cleaner you can use for all surfaces is Ultima Shampoo Gel, it's actually not a gel but a foam based cleaner and will work well on all the surfaces. That or dilute Ultima Waterless Wash to a 1:22 ratio and that works well.

I've had good luck with Lexol products also. No shine and doesn't leave the surface greasy, oily feeling.

And as mentioned using a sun visor, shield, screen whatever is a no brainer. Vinyl or leather dash. The folding, rigid one sold by Porsche et al, probably works and looks a bit better. The wire rimmed collapsible jobs are more convenient. Either will do the job.

What Potsnu said! Leather masters products are excellent. I have full leather interior and use distilled water to clean once I have applied their protection cream. If the leather is dirty use a good cleaner then the leather protection cream or their leather barrier. Both these will provide UV protection and will resist almost all types of stains.

Griots has a new product called Leather 3 in 1. It has UV protection built into it. I like it. Leaves a matt finish when you're done.
