More! Radar Detector!

I've always been partial to V1s and have always mounted them high on the windshield, because that's what they recommend.
Lately, I've been seeing more and more detectors mounted low on the windshield and I've seen articles on the web supporting this....better laser detection.

What's the concensus?

I am getting a mirror mount from Blendmount on my BMW 335i Coupe. It will be about middle of the windshield. I have always mounted mine in the middle because I am afraid to have it fall if it is up to high.

Actually, it makes sense. Lasers have a much tighter beam and do not diffuse as much as a radar pulse. And since laser speed guns are usually aimed at the front bumper or license plate for maximum reflectivity, mounting the detector lower would help.

However, I'm with the other poster who mentioned that laser detection is essentially useless. As soon as your detector goes off, you've already been clocked. A laser shifter is more effective and they're usually mounted low on the car, like in the front grille or air ducts.

As a former V1 owner (until some @#$#er stole it) I mounted high in one car and low in the CS, I could not tell any discernible difference either way. Both locations provided excellent results/protection. That said, if you get hit with laser and you're speeding, get ready to pull over. High/Low isn't going to matter either way.

Not entirely true...there are several factors that determine how quickly a LIDAR gun can lock.
LIDAR works best against a flat reflective surface in the front, like a license plate or metallic front radiator grille. Caymans and Boxsters don't have much of a flat surface anywhere, and if you don't mount a front license plate it makes these cars much more tricky to lock on to with a LIDAR. Color also may help ( darker non-Metallics are tougher to lock on to ). If you have a custom installed system your detection will also occur earlier since the detectors are better placed closer to the location that a Leo would be aiming. It has been my experience over the last 3 years that it takes a Leo 3 attempts before he gets a lock on a Cayman or Boxster ( I have owned both ). This has given me enough time to decrease speed if I am not going crazy fast ( less than 20 Mph over in a 75 let's say ) from the first hit till the LIDAR gets a lock (usually a couple seconds).
I have also heard using special paint on the front headlights ( forgot the brand ) also helps delay the lock time though I have not tried it.
If you are in a Cayenne or other vehicle with a large flat frontal area then it takes next to nothing to lock on, and in those cases it's best to move to a state that allows LIDAR Shifting if you want to speed frequently :)
I have an Escort 9500ci installed and highly recommend it.

I've always mounted mine low down on the windshield, for several reasons:

- It avoids long cords draping all over the place,
- I think it gives a better "view" for the detector back through the rear window (which is important for the V1), and
- I think it's less obvious to cops. I also use the stealth display. My experience in talking with a cop friend is that he will typically give you 5-8 MPH cushin over the speed limit, but not if he sees you have a radar detector. His philosophy is "if you want to play the game of beating radar with your detector that's fine with me - just don't expect any leeway from me."

I don't believe that the difference in mounting height of 12 inches or so makes a bit of difference in sensitivity looking forward.

It's worth the trouble to go with a fixed install, my 9500ci works great and is unobtrusive. As noted by others in this thread, the LEO's are using laser a lot, I love watching the display on my Escort "shifting" to jam 'em. :taunt:
