Rear Dash Cam Installation 981 Cayman

Can anyone find a DIY for this? Or has anyone installed one?

I have a Thinkware F770 that has been sitting for months awaiting installation :)

I have been scouring the internet/google for a guide on how difficult this is i.e. removal of trim and wiring etc. without much success!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Maybe you haven't found anything because there really isn't such a thing as a rear dash cam. My dash is in front and I have a dash cam. I also have a backup cam for the rear. There are many threads here on installing both types. My diy thread https://www.planet-9.com/981-diy-discussion/114895-cayman-roofcam-rear-vision-solved.html is about 4 down.

Exactly. Not sure why people feel the need to respond a la douche le douche.

Smurfs, there are a few diys on here for backup cams and how people wired them. I think most of them are wired into the entertainment system though...not sure if that is what you are looking for?

I am going to install my Viofo A129 Duo this week, I too am looking at videos for the installation. My main concern is how I am going to route to the rear cam and to be able to hide any excess cabling.

I am not connecting to the fuse box, have a phone battery charger that I will use for parking mode as needed. I'll let you know how it goes and any help I can offer afterward. I don't think it will be too hard, I just don't want to have post-installation regrets that I should have done this or that.

I've always wondered about the excess cable and also isn't it relatively thick as well. I'm researching dual cameras as well and I'm sure someone has done an install video. I'll see if I can find it. Curious about using the phone charger for parking mode. Please let us know how it turns out.

This isn't an installation video but does show that the rear camera is not mounted on the glass.

They fashioned a bracket from plumber's strap and covered it in Tesa tape. I'd think other coverings would work as well or maybe paint it, etc. I imagine somewhere there is a bracket that would work, I might have to spend some time at the hardware store tomorrow. I wouldn't be surprised if I had something in my stash of misc household parts.

Also think a small length of cable raceway may work as well, need to do some measuring.

That is the video I remember seeing. Thanks.

The clip doesn't look like it will work for the 981, so I think mounting it high on the glass will be best. Not sure I can fish/route the cable under the large plastic cover on the glass, a flat(ter) ribbon cable would be far better. More head scratching involved.

Going to install like this pic, will have to see if cable can be hidden but might be exposed over the plastic window cover.

I'm following your install. A dual dash cam is on my "to do" list. Where to run the cable and what to do with all the extra has always been a question when it comes to the rear camera. Can't wait to see what you come up with. Hard to tell from the image you posted but I think I get the idea. Just curious, why doesn't the clip work?

I ordered a newer battery to power the camera and a mini-cable snake in case I need it for that back window. As for the clip, I don't see a way to make it secure and stable if it is just shoved in that area as shown in the video. The video talks about pulling down the headliner but I don't care to do that. I will look at it very carefully to decide how I want to proceed before wrecking things. :) I will try to make time to have plenty of photos and notes of what I do. Might be a few more days until I can get after it tho.

I installed a 2CH cam the other day on my 981CS. If you put the camera as high as you can up on the glass you can't even see it in the rear mirror. I wedged the cable into where the headliner starts all the way to the rear. Then with the hatch open, I took just enough cable to make it from where the headliner starts to the rear cam. When you close the hatch the cable curls up on itself horizontally. You can _barely_ see a little bit of cable in the rear view mirror.

I didn't want to pull the whole hatch apart in order to run it through a grommet. Too lazy. Not perfect, but 90% there IMO.

Did you have any excess cable to the back? If so how did you hide it?

I have the same question. Seems like they give you a lot of cable. Where can it all go?

Just finished installing my A129 Duo, not terribly happy with my work and if I had to do it over again I'd have a pro do it. The front camera was little trouble, mainly getting the cable around the top of the A pillar and into the dash took only a few special words of encouragement. The rear camera in this product has a very thick round cable that caused trouble along the small side window, I could not get it tucked in, so threw in the towel and used a clip up high on the glass. I ran the excess cable all around the weatherstripping in the trunk and mounted the camera high on the back window. Only a little cable is visible. Could have used two cable installation tools at times but made do with what I had.

I am powering mine with a "EasyAcc 20000mAh Portable Charger Fast Recharge Power Bank with 4A 2-Port Input 4.8A Smart Output High Capacity External Battery Pack" via Amazon. It sits in the glovebox and I will plug it into the car as needed to recharge or bring it in the house.

Should I get another camera in the future I would either make sure the cables are thinner or pay a pro to do it. Btw some pros will allow you to buy your own camera and they will charge for the install. Might be worth it unless you really want to tackle it yourself. Maybe Porsche could see fit to have an optional overly expensive system, maybe with upgradeable cameras?

Thanks for the info and the pic's as well. I was interested in the A 129 as well but the thick cable is my concern. I think the BlackVue rear cable is thinner? Can anyone verify that? I'm leaning toward the BlackVue 750 2CH.

I think in the upcoming year we'll see a lot of new cams with some innovative features. The A129 is a decent entry level cam with excellent video quality but lacks some of the advanced parking features that I didn't really need.

Wouldn't it be great to have the rear cam communicate with the front via bluetooth or wifi with no cables?

I think you'd be pleased with the Blackview, that looks to be a top system.
