Quick update - I managed to install mine last night (replacing CDR-31 without SPP) and IT WORKS!!
Still need to finesse the installation a bit and route the USB cables and GPS antenna properly, but basically took out old unit, plugged in the Erisin and it just fired up.
Steering wheel controls seem to work straight away.
Only thing seems to be that the small display screen to the right of the tacho displays the audio source as something Chinese!
I need to play around with it a lot more but Carplay works, and does split screen display so you can have Spotify on one half and Waze on the other half, for example.
For the price I'm very impressed: screen resolution is so much better than the old CDR-31 and sound quality seems better too, the FM radio even works properly now which was always terrible on the old unit. Even the surround of the screen matches the interior plastics well - see pics below. All in all I recommend it as a great cheap alternative to the Joyeauto & similar route. Will update further when I've had a chance to play around some more.

What is SPP ? I have a CDR with Bose does it have an optical connection to the amp? If so does the optical connection work ?

I'm not Aqua981c - but if I had to guess - he meant SSP rather than SPP. SSP = sound system plus.

And to answer your other question - you have fiber. Any system using the Bose amplifier/speaker package uses fiber from the headunit to the amplifier (and separate CD changer if one is installed.) SO you'd need the fiber converter.

I am working on the Erisin installation into my Japan specification 2014 base 981. Japan spec 981's did not come from the factory with a normal Porsche PCM - they came from the factory with a Japan specification Clarion navigation head unit, which is completely different in specification and electrical connections to a Porsche PCM.

Because the car came from the factory with a clarion head unit instead of a PCM; my cabin wiring loom does not have the Porsche quad lock connector to plug into the rear of the Erisin head unit for power connectivity, speaker connections etc. - it has a bunch of connectors unique to the Clarion head unit.

In order for me to plug into the back of the Erisin head unit, an option for me is to obtain a used 981 OEM wiring loom, and splice the PCM quad lock connector into my existing cabin wiring loom, which will enable connectivity to the Erisin head unit.

Question: Does anybody know whether the PCM quad lock connector is located in either the cabin wiring loom, or alternatively the console wiring loom. Knowing which loom contains the PCM quad lock connector will enable me to buy the correct used 981 wiring loom; in order to splice the quad lock connector from that loom into my Japan spec 981.

Thanks for any advice

I installed mine yesterday w/ a Bose system. Using a Natika backup camer, GPS adapter cable for factory antenna, and aluminum knobs from Amazon to replace the plastic ones. So far, so good! I'm happy w/ Wireless Carplay connectivity. Reverse camera looks average, but I'll need to play w/ settings. Also, no hiss in my Bose system yet, but I have 12db attenuators if needed.

Link to the knobs ? Did you have GPS before ?

I’m a new member and couldn’t post the link. Here’s the description: Szliyands 2pcs black aluminum alloy + black rubber ring rotary electronic control potentiometer knob for 6mm diameter shaft, height 25mm, diameter 15.5mm

A couple updates:
  • A lightning cable plugged into one of the USB ports of the Erisin does NOT charge my Iphone 14. Not sure of the specs of Erisin's USB.
  • Added Supershieldz anti-glare film to the screen. Huge difference and a must-have in my opinion. I've added a picture of the film added. The glare of the unprotected face just below the screen is pretty obvious.
  • Still tweaking the reverse camera lines (wheelbase, length, etc), but happy w/ the performance.
  • Very happy w/ the sound. To my untrained ears, it actually has a better soundstage than the PCM. Not sure how that's possible since it's only stereo going through the optical decoder.
  • The factory USB port in the glove box still works and makes loading updates/wallpaper very easy.
  • Have yet to test the factory GPS antenna reception, but I run everything through my phone (Waze & Spotify), so not too concerned.

For me, this is a no-brainer $400 upgrade and wish I had done it sooner!

A seller on Yafuoku sells the Clarion to modern pin-out adapter, including the necessary cage modifications which you will also need.
I removed my OEM Clarion and replaced with an Atoto S8 and it was 100% plug-and-play with the Atoto pig-tail...

For those who have been using the Erisin head unit for awhile, do you experience any problems with it?

If I turn the sleep mode off in the factory setting, once in a while when I turn on the car, the unit will be on a repeating freeze and boot loops. It will boot on, run for a few seconds, then freeze, reboot, and repeat.

So I turn on sleep mode again to avoid booting on the head unit every time I turn the car on and just keep the car on a trickle charger. It was working ok for a week then I had to keep the car in the garage for a few days while going out of town. Today I turned the car on and the unit was dead. I'm getting no signal from it at all.

Am I the only one with these issues?

Does anyone have a guide on installing a backup cam with this?
get a camera like this Wireless Camera For Porsche Boxster Cayman / GTS / 987C 987-2 981Rear view Camera HD CCD Back up Reverse Parking Camera . It snaps into the license plate light.
Dont bother trying the wireless, quality is terrrible. Its fairly easy to fish the wires up through a tail light. I thought running the wires to the front head unit was going to be a pain, but i literally
just push it under trim pieces all the way there in like 5 minutes. You can grab power from the reverse light, or theres a fuse box under the right tail light. Run the rca to the head unit. and everything automatically works.

Backup camera was the most painful part of the process for me. I'm not happy w/ the quality of the Natika camera I installed. Too grainy. Almost all cameras will require removing the back bumper and rear quarter interior trim. The trim removal is the most painful part of the process. I'll post pics. I'd say 5hrs just running the backup camera. My Erisin has been running flawlessly so far.
