Porsche to build driving center in Carson

So, I was at the local Porsche Dealer trying to figure out if I should buy another car, more of an apex hi performance purchase (that is another story, because what I want is a C4S like car on the cayman platform--something that is not in the product line).

I am talking to Mike, who has been with at the Pacific Porsche Dealership about what I might consider, and it comes up that maybe I should drive the GT and other cars at Porsche driving school while under instruction.

So get this: he mentions that the land near the Goodyear Blimp landing site in Carson, CA (Los Angeles County) has been purchased, and they will be laying down a track to be used by Porsche Driving School.

Anyone know anything about this? Great news for us in Sou Cal, assuming we want to drop five grand for a few days of training...

Thanks for the confirm. I'd imagine they could get open pretty quickly using some temp buildings on site, and laying the asphalt.

Maybe I should call them and try to be there for the first class.

As to why buy their own land, humm? Today a track, and tomorrow, as they wish.

As pricey as the experience may be, everyone who has been seemingly gives it a thumbs up.

Curious that they would buy land and build their own track. Doesn't the driving school in the east just rent time at an existing track?

Things I like about the concept: don't have to drive my car, can try out different car platforms, spending time on the skid plate and working to learn the edges of performance, and the intention of an intense experience.

Pricey, but I have heard that one can negotiate a package deal sometimes...

I think the idea is a great one. Porsche probably sells more cars in California alone compared to some small countries in the world. I would love to go to PDS, but going to Alabama has never been on my bucket list. I hope they do it!

Barber is an amazing track, though I haven't done the PDS. Truly an impressive investment of resources to build a world-class facility from scratch. When I drove it the first time (second track school ever, with BMW), I thought it was cool. It wasn't until I had a student & was riding shotgun, that I noticed the number of bronze sculptures scattered around the grounds, outside the fence. Bronze sculptures, placed at a track?!?!

Definitely worth a visit.

Confirmed today at the L.A. auto show press conference. The Porsche Experience will grow to include a new 53 acre site in Carson with ground breaking summer 2012. The site will be larger than what is currently planned for Atlanta with test track, etc. Should be cool.

UPDATE-NOW APPROVED
Carson OKs Porsche driving skills course | Our Weekly - African American News | Black News | Black Entertainment | Black America

Excerpt below... Sounds fun... Prices starting at $150 per day--believe that when I see it...

"It will not be a race track.

Located at 19220 S. Main St., the facility will be a driving skills course, which will be open to any licensed driver 18 years and older with any car model who wants to know how to drive safely on all roads and in all conditions. “Unlike our proving grounds, which develops cars; and our test facilities, which develop race drivers, this facility will develop the modern motorist,” Taylor said. “Carson is an ideal location because drivers here travel in many different circumstances due to the varied topography and the extensive network of roads and highways in Southern California.”

Starting at $150 per person for a half-day session, students will traverse a paved racing circuit, an off-road testing area, a slow-friction skid pad, wet roads, icy roads and uphill/downhill roads in order to become more skilled drivers, particularly in bad weather and in emergency situations. There will be a 65,000-square-foot main complex for offices, driving simulators and dining facilities for employees and visitors. The landscaped grounds will include 411 parking spaces. The Porsche Human Performance Center will be a sport science laboratory to maximize personal fitness, wellness and athletic performance."

This is where the Dominguez Hills Golf Course used to be. I live about 15 minutes from this place. The site can be seen from the 405 freeway where it meets up with the 110.

Ground has already been broken.

Porsche 53-acre mecca coming to Los Angeles

Did you guys know that Porsche is currently building an "Experience Center" in Los Angeles? I just found out about it. Looks amazing! They bought nearly an entire square mile triangle of property near Torrance, CA back in 2011 supposedly, broke ground on it last summer, and is scheduled to have it completed and open this fall! It's got a massive track, including a mile-long straight, restaurant, museum, etc.

I can't wait to go!!!

Check out this pretty fantastic video: Porsche Experience Center LA on Vimeo

I heard about this a couple of years ago and have been looking for it on my commute down the 405 everyday. Can't wait! Hopefully they will be open to POC and PCA track events.

I live in Northern CA but this weekend happened to drive by the construction site. From the 405 freeway all you see is piles of dirt but I saw the artists renderings of the project last year when it was announced and it looks pretty cool. I look forward to driving that track!

I was at the Porsche World Road Show at California Speedway this past Memorial Day weekend and they briefly spoke about the track. It will not be open to the public such as Willow Springs, Calspeed or Buttonwillow. I believe they said that it will be strictly a "test track" and for the Porsche Driving Experience. But who knows after a couple of years down...
