Severe Squeaking!

Greetings everyone! I have developed a severe Squeking somewhere under my steering wheel or floor board.
It is more prevelant when the car is accelerating. It's from the torque of moving forward if that makes sense.
I have searched and found nothing. It resembles what styrofoam would sound like rubbing? I have an automatic tilt steering wheel. Any help would be greatly appreciated before driving 3 hours to the dealership.
Cheers,
Todd

Yes several times and it does not stop? I have brought if all the way forward all the way down and up and still the same. Seems like its close to the floor board sometimes. Does not squeak when turning... Its at its loudest when the car is moving forward

I have this EXACT issue in my 981 Boxster. I struggled to describe it to the dealer, but your styrofoam example was perfect. It comes and goes (maybe 50% of the time) and of course didn't do it when I brought it in. I cannot figure out what causes it, I don't think it's the steering column though. Truly one of the most irritating noises ever.

I decided to just forget about it as the car is being traded next month for a 2015. I pray the new one doesn't do it. If you do get an answer and resolution, let me know. I'm very curious to know the cause.

Definitely not a strut and the damn thing is NOT squeaking today? I do believe it is temperature affected. I have not ran the air today as it is cooler outside.
I'll keep everyone posted as to the culprit when I get back from the dealer in a fe weeks.

Mine does it too. Same kind of annoying squeacking around steering wheel somewhere. Very difficult to even understand where exactly it's coming from. Only happens like once a month for me, so I never put too much effort in it.

Early 350Z's had squeaky dash's from plastic pieces expanding and contracting with temperature changes and then rubbing together. Sounds like that's your cause but the location is a mystery.

Very frustrating. I have just had a similar event that took 10 days at the dealer to solve. Initially they thought the dash but then they sent sound files off to Germany for analysis and they determined a faulty front strut. Now it is replaced and all is well! This surprised me as the squeak sounded like it was internal. So it could be your issue.
good luck

I seem to have the squeaking issue as well and would like to know if could be related. It only happens after I turn the wheel more than 90 degrees and it squeaks when centering back. The squeak isn't too loud but noticeable and can also be replicated at standstill. Could you please share your experience

Well since this post my squeak has yet to come back but I forgot to mention that this squeak has happened at a stand still
as well that is why I find it hard to believe that my issue is a strut. However it is more prevalent during acceleration.
Thanks for all the feedback guys!
I'll let you know when it gets resolved if it does...

Yep, mine has happened at a standstill also...but def most prevalent under acceleration. Not necessarily movement though. I've put the car in neutral, revved the engine, and the squeaking flares up.

Looks like it may have to do with the gas tank which is in front and under the dash area. I noticed on a YouTube comment for my video that a dealer on the East Coast had narrowed it to that. On a whim I started monitoring the noise on full tanks and empty tanks. Sure enough when the tank is full the sound is loudest. When accelerating or braking the gas is moving in the tank and might be causing the issue. So I filled it up and it was really squeaking when I took it in for the 20k service today. The lead tech drove with me and it was awesome to have someone else besides my wife agree it was occurring. I'll let everyone know what they find, but they didn't call to pick it up today lol. Guess I'll enjoy the Cayenne Platinum Edition a while longer.

Took mine to the dealer Friday after a fill up and let the sa drive it. It's was at its loudest even when the car came to a stop it was still squeaking! I told him about the gas tank thread and he agreed it could be the culprit. He's doing a little more research and I'll take it back in. Til then driving on half a tank as the squeaking stops..it is not brought on by temperature change.

No squeak thus far in my 2015, knock on wood. If it does decide to rear it's ugly head, as least we know the cause and solution now.

I would imagine it's fixed by now. My Cayman was delivered just a week after launch cars so it was rather early in the production. Not sure if that's everyone else's experience, but here's the tech's notes:

"Client reports that when there is a half a tank of gas or more, there is a squeak in the dash. Tech test drove and heard noise coming from the dash in front of the driver. Tech followed client concern and connected chassi ears to the front of the vehicle on the body and test drove. Found noises coming from the front fire wall area. Tech dropped the rear of the gas tank down and found rear tank insulation/body contact pads were missing. Tech R&R tank to install pads. Bled coolant and test drove to verify repair".

I was paying attention last couple of weeks. And I just can't find the pattern. Full tank def. not causing the squicking. Not always. Cold weather - no. It's been pretty cold last week - below 40F today in the morning - and everything is quiet. Argh!

Mine was definitely the fuel tank. I kept it around 30% full for the last couple weeks before I got rid of it and had no squeaking. When it was full..squeaking.

Good to hear! My '15 has remained silent so far. I really don't miss my '13 981 at all; not even a little haha.

This thread is very helpful!!!

My 2014 CS has been at dealer for 3 days now. I test drove with tech and it was squeaking badly just as described in this thread. Goes away as fuel level goes below 1/2. I have tried to direct them to the info in this thread but don't know if they are listening!!

I'm getting concerned at what they have disassembled in their search and what my car will look like when they're done!

My car has an intermittent dash rattle (on bad roads) that could be this issue. Will pay attention next time. At least it's not constant. And I have a full tank now. Does anybody know if the fix is from the top or the bottom? Maybe it's something I could address, since it's definitely not nearly as bad as stated here. At least it can be fixed OUTSIDE the car. I just don't trust techs quieting squeaks and rattles. The only time I attempted that, they weren't fixed, and ended up with scratches and scuffs dealer asked me to prove they weren't there when car was dropped off. Geez. Besides, I like the challenge of tackling those. Unless absolutely driving me nuts, I don't plan to ever let a dealer attempt to fix them again. Techs are not trained for that anyway, so might as well attempt it myself;).
