Ended up being a faulty driver side strut brace, which is also a known problem area.
I've never heard of that, but thanks for bringing it up. May I ask where exactly this problem is? By 'strut brace' I envision a piece of metal tyinig both struts together for better handling, but it can't be 'left' or 'right', so it might be a different thing. Just curious. Thx.

Not a wrencher so couldn't really tell you, but they had to remove the strut to replace the bad parts. I'll see if I can find the service record later today.

One of the car mags had a long term Cayman, and they had the same problem.

Here is what Car & Driver said about their long term car:

At 29,637 miles we returned to the dealership to investigate a rattling noise we began to hear coming from the steering column or dash. Turns out the culprit was a left-front-strut upper bearing and support, which the dealer replaced under warranty.

Very different than a brace;). Thank you for the clarification. Hopefully Porsche fixed that on 2016s, since it was a known problem. We'll see. But at least we now know what are the symptoms of such failures.

Yes, but like I said I'm not a mechanic. I just drive the things and want them to perform. I don't care how they work or what the parts are.

I have been able to reproduce the noise in my 2013 911S with a full tank of gas. Once it gets below 2/3 tank the noise pretty much goes away. I'll have the dealer look at it in a few weeks.

Thanks for all the info here - it should help.

I thought I would write a conclusion to my story. The short version is the dealer stepped up and took responsibility for their employee's actions without question. The problem was eliminated. My car was repaired by a master tech. They went over the car to assure nothing was damaged. They also replaced the steering wheel as it had been gouged. As I had originally suspected two of the fuel tank pads had slipped and the new ones are a revised design that covers more area. The noise is gone!

I have the squeak in the driver's dash on my 2014 Cayman S. It's been driving me nuts ( not a very long drive :) ) for months. I haven't correlated it with fuel level but now I will look into that. I'm so glad i found this tread. I'll schedule an appointment with the dealer. My previous interactions with the service depart were less than satisfactory. Here's hoping it goes better this time.

Posted a thread of my own without seeing this one, I have this issue, here is a video, is this what everyone else hears?

I have this exact same noise in my '14 base Boxster (with about 28K miles). It developed couple of months ago, and has been driving me nuts. I'm glad I found this thread so I can share it with the dealer. The noise is less noticeable when I have less fuel in the car than when full, but it's still there. The best remedy for now before I get this permanently fixed is to put my top down and rev the flat 6. Spirited driving drowns out the annoying squeaks (and rattles from other areas).

This is my 4th Porsche, and the rattles/squeaks have been my biggest gripe about all of them. Even my lowly Prius was more rattle free.

I'm bringing my 2013 Carrera S in Monday to get a warning light looked at and the service manager said he saw a bulletin about the squeak (padding between gas tank and firewall) and will take care of that at the same time.

If the squeak happens only on a full tank of gas, sounds like 2 pieces of styrofoam being rubbed together and appears that it comes from up inside the dash, you might have the same issue I had.
