Tune it or get a Gen 2?

Hoping someone can help me out....Ive got a Cayman 2.7, had it for the last two years from new and been very happy with it. Having said that Im getting a bit of an itch that I need to scratch and not sure how to....either go for a Gen 2 and potentially then move to the S in doing so, or do something to my current car. I have absolutely zero experience in tuning of any sorts and would not even let myself get close to the car with as a little as a screwdriver.

So...can anyone tell me what kind of tuning options I have and wether theyre worth it?

Cheers and looking for insight!

Your investment $ will go a lot further if trade in for gen II. Mods will increase depreciation of current car and not provide you the satisfaction of enjoying the pure bred factory engineering. Trade her in for a gen II.

I think this might be a difficult question to answer. You are going to lose a substantial sum of money if you trade in your Cayman in this market. You will lose some value to the trade itself and then you will lose money to depreciation of the new vehicle. The combined loss will almost certainly exceed the cost of any single mod you do and I'll include the TPC Turbo mod in the list.

That being said, what's important to you and what goals do you have? 20,000 USD spent (14,400 Euro or so) will make a dramatic difference in the car you now own. My suspicion is you will spend more than that to move to an '09 CS. Your individual tastes and desires are unknown to me but there is a wide variety of performance and appearance modifications available to meet just about any budget. Sort out your goals (maybe you've already done this but they aren't in your post) and your path forward might become clear.

Thanks to the replies guys. I was leaning towards a Gen 2 given my total inexperience in tuning. Think Ill wait till the end of the year when dealer quotas may not be looking good (or even moderate) and see what I can get!

The Gen 2 would be the smarter choice for a couple reasons:

-warranty coverage vs. no guarantees with mods
-mpg's with dfi engine
-updated styling and LED lights
-you can spec it out to meet your needs (bluetooth, xenons, ipod, etc..)

Normally, it is almost always cheaper to buy a faster car than to try and mod an existing one. For openers, the cost of the mods is money down the drain when it comes time to sell and a modded car will actually be worth less than a stock example. Anyone who has ever done mods knows one thing leads to another and anything that increases HP significantly will lead to lower reliability and probably drivability issues as well. It's hard to top factory engineers. Mods can be fun, but are best done on cars near the end of their depreciation curve by people looking for particular changes or making into a track only vehicle.

Your best move from a financial standpoint would be to trade for a gen1 CS. They've depreciated a lot and a crosswise move shouldn't cost a ton. A new one is likely to take a hit depreciation wise.

I know this is a bit of an old post but just wanted to say a quick thanks to all for their input. I scower car sites pretty much every evening including looking for deals.....two weekends ago I went to the nurburgring and before going I saw a good deal in a dealer that was right on the way....stopped off on the Friday, went to the ring sat and sun, back on Mon for a test drive and ordered. Stepping into a new CS from my current 08 C. The C was my first Porsche and after having loved it every single day it was an "easy" choice for the next one to be a Porsche too.....but needed a little more grunt!
