It looks like I'll be hanging onto my 09 Boxster S rather than trading her in this coming spring. I guess it will be a base 911 or a lightly used GT4. What shall it be??????

GT4 every day and twice on sunday.
Did LA PEC earlier in the month and drove 991 C2S and GT4 back to back and it's not even close. If you like the 987.2, you'll love the GT4.

991 is like a nice blazer. It looks handsome, and is more than adequate for most occasions.
But the GT4 is like an expensive tailored tux. You are wearing the car, every inch just fits you perfectly and it's like a second skin.
Thanks for your reply. The only thing holding me back in getting the GT4 is my 21 year old son. He's on my insurance so adding the GT4 will double my rates. It looks like he'll have to get his own coverage however here in Ontario males under 25 pay more than double female drivers. Anyway, life goes on......

Tommy, thank you very much for your carefully worded reply. It's funny you talk about the TT as my wife really wants to get another TT. We had a first generation TT. It was a great car but not manly enough for me. My 09 Boxster S is a fantastic car. I drive it half the year as I park it during the winter months. When I pull it out mid March it feels like I've bought a new car. Before I know it March will be here.............................Cheers Tommy.

I have done a lot of thinking about it, and have decided that my 987.2 is a keeper. I see no reason to trade it in for anything Porsche currently makes, nor for a BMW or an Audi, as good as they may (or may not) be.

When I took the cover off the car this past spring, I just stood there and stared at it. My wife said, "Aren't you going to get in and start it up?" I stared blankly at the car, and she then paused, and said, "Oh, I get it. Sure is a great looking ride."

At one point during the first drive of the spring, I mashed the throttle. Wow! Just... freakin'... WOW! Thought to myself, "So THIS is why you bought this car." (Well, that and everything else that makes a Porsche sports car special.) Memories of the shrieking, wailing flat 6 will keep me warm through yet another long, cold winter. Can't wait for spring!
Now that was funny.

I go out to my Boxster S quite a bit during the winter months and sit in the car which is parked in our attached unheated garage. I usually go out with a glass of wine put the top down and listen to some good music. The wife pops out and sees me in the car and stares at me while shaking her head. She's puzzled says nothing and returns into the house. An hour or so later she comes back nto the garage now with my uncorked wine and pours me a glass. Haven't done that this year but may do so in the near future. Anyway I thought I was crazy but after reading this I don't think so.

Four cylinder turbos suck! Sorry but they sound bad. BMW, Audi, Porsche, Subaru, they all sound bad. Yeah I have heard them. Even the new 911 with the turbo six sounds asthmatic when you listen to it outside the car. Maybe a personal thing but I love the sound of the NA flat sixes from Porsche. I prefer the slightly deeper tone of the 3.8 L to the 3.4 L in my car.
I have two turbo cars, an 07 GTI and a 16 S3. They don't sound as good as my Boxster S but both have great engines. My Boxster is far better but it can't be driven in the snow like my other two cars. Anyway, life goes on.

I believe the turbo 4 is just a stop-gap technology. I wonder why Porsche bothered with it at all. Maybe the EV and/or hybrid platforms weren't ready before stiffer EU regulations started kicking in. I don't know.

I would not expect a CEO to honor a company's mission from twenty years ago. Regulations change, and it is entirely possible that we will eventually see a high volume self driving Porsche trucklet of some sort, just like we saw the return of a four cylinder. But I believe that Porsche has no intention of automating their sports cars. An EV platform is not necessarily a self driving car, and to jump to that conclusion is without basis. Porsche knows their sports car buyers better than that.

I don't need to convince people to give EVs a shot. They are coming with or without our approval. You can try it, or you can grumble 'cause things aint like they used to be. It's up to you.
Stick_Figure I hear you however I don't think someone who buys an EV should get a rebate draft from the tax payers. My friend has bought 3 Tesla and for each one he has received $7,500 from the provincial government here in Ontario, Canada. I feel if you can afford an expensive electric car you should not get a rebate. If he was buying a car that assisted a neighbour getting work then maybe. If you can afford $150,000 cash per car why should you get a rebate? Anyway electric cars don't do anything but help clog the roads. At least somebody who buy a gas or diesel car is paying tax each time they fill the tank. Anyway, that's my two cents.

Fast1 I doubt there were any discounted 981s. If there were I'm sure they would have been scooped up by guys/gals on this forum.

Fast1 I know it's a demo but it's also a year old already. Looks like Ill be keeping my car for the foreseeable future.

I could be wrong as usual, but I think my wife's 1999 A4 quattro and my 2000 A6 quattro had a roughly 50:50 torque split between the front and rear. The Haldex in my Volvo is basically a FWD system with 95% torque going to the front wheels and is an on demand AWD system depending upon wheel slippage. The A3 and TT use the Haldex if I am not mistaken but not the A4 or A6. The 4-matic advertised by MB is also supposedly a 40:60 (roughly) rear biased awd system. Don't know if it varies like Porsche's awd in the 911s. Quattro with snow tires was extremely good in my experience, better than the reactive system in my Volvos, but reliability was awful..
I had two S4s a 2010 then a 2013. With winter tires those cars were unstoppable. I now have a 2016 S3 which I got stuck with in our first winter storm. We had about 4 inches of snow and she started spinning. Eventually I got her out. The from tires were spinning. I had no wheel spin from the rear tires. I had the car looked at but they couldn't find a problem. I now have to wait until there is snow on the ground to return it to the dealer. I'm not happy about this as I paid a lot of money for this car. My gen 1 Audi TT when equipped with winter tires was a beast in the snow. Anyway other then that it has been a great car.

If I could pick one car to add to my collection today it would be a GT4. As they don't make this car anymore I'll either have to buy a used one or a 718 Cayman S. Nice to have my problem.

In the USA they have very low fuel prices compared to the rest of the world except for Venezuela where they are practically giving the fuel away. I love my 09 Boxster S and can't wait to put it back on the road after its winter rest. Id buy another Porsche for sure but have no reason to do now as I feel the 718 with its 4 cylinder is like going in reverse. Having said that my Audi S3 4 cylinder turbo is great.

I'm in the Chicago area and already seeing local Porsche dealers discounting 718 inventories by $ 4,000 - 5,000. Not a good sign IMO for a brand new model.
I never pay asking price for any car. For my 2016 S3 I went to 3 different dealers until one caved to the price I wanted. The price I got was well below what I could get at one of the other two dealers. Anyway it's fun negotiating. I've gone as far as NC to get the price I wanted to pay for my 09 Boxster S. I'm not in a hurry for any car/ This 718 should be discounted as we are getting 33% less cylinders.

They sell Porsches in Canada? Didn't know that. How many? 30-40 a year. Sorry couldn't resist. After all we are living in a surreal world right now in the US. Who knows what is true and what is fake? But we sure are great.

I remember reading an article in the WSJ about Porsche sales in China and how price sensitive Chinese buyers are even though they want the badge. Four cylinder Macans are apparently a low profit car for Porsche but popular in China if I remember correctly. So, by that reasoning, a more expensive Boxster/Cayman may not be in demand. I am very familiar with India and I wouldn't dream of buying a Boxster or Cayman if I lived there. Macan? Sure, the 4-cyclinder to crawl along doing 10-20 kmph in big cities and maybe 100 on the highways dodging cows and another random things. But I would have the Porsche badge which would make me feel special. They even sold a 911r in Bangalore. If you ever visited that city, it would leave you scratching your head. bTW I was there recently and on my way to the airport, saw a 911 turbo, 997, on the so-called highway. It is not to diss those places but high performance cars don't belong on those streets. Just like they don't belong on the streets of Manhattan.
Yes they do. We also have gas, air and water. Can't wait to see what we get next year.

I have no problem whatsoever paying $80,000 for the 2018 four cylinder Cayman S I plan to order. Zero. Rather, I will enjoy more up to date technology, better performance, more horsepower, and more torque than my 981 or for that matter, any stock 981 Cayman, S, or GTS. So what if it has a four cylinder engine?

And the sound? That does not bother me either. The turbo? Not a problem either - my BMW E92 with a turbo did just fine.

So for everyone who does not like the new engine, fine, do not purchase the new car. But for the rest of us, I am sure we will enjoy our new cars.
I agree with what you typed. For those who dislike the 718, buy something else. I don't need a new car but after reading this post it would appear there will be some great prices on used 718s within the next few years. My 2016 S3 turbo engine is great however I prefer the supercharged engine I had in my 2010 & 2013 S4s. Porsche can't make everybody happy.

Actually i have driven the previous generation S4 and 330xi. While nice, they felt neither here nor there. Not comfortable enough like my SUV and nowhere as fun to drive as my Boxster. Need to drive my car more. That is the main frustration.
I say to h#ll with all SUVs. I had a 2010 and 2013 S4. I'm now in a 2016 S3 as well as a 09 Boxster S. Nothing compares to the Boxster. I have the S3 mainly for winter use. If I could I would drive the Boxster year round. The turbo engine in the S3 is great but it doesn't compare to the S4s in the snow. Anyway....

My XC60 T6 with its smooth 300hp turbo six is like an isolation chamber with extra comfy seats for my dull 75 mile one way, highway commute. These SUVs have their uses. And at 4200 lbs with snow tires, really good in the snow. And as I get older, I find it easier to get in and out of my Volvo without throwing my back. Also easier to get my walker in and out of the car.
With your walker I'll give you a pass. I agree they have their uses but most are used because people like to sit up high and that includes my mother.
