You non-718 owners are so funny.

All's I can say is that long before I even knew this blog/website existing I did hours of research on the 718, reading just about every review (written and YouTube) on the internet I could find. The vast majority of reviewers had nothing but positive things to say about the 718. This particular post (Worst 718 Review?) is meant for people who own earlier versions on the Cayman/Boxster who somehow get their jollies out of bashing something they don't own (and probably haven't even driven). It's actually pretty sad that non-718 owners have to come on to a "718 chat" blog seemingly just to bash it. Rather than doing that why not find a blog that is dedicated to the version you own???

Read the graphs above. BIG jump in price.
I've priced out MSRP on a 2016 and a 2017 (similar equipment) and the price difference is not BIG.

That's because you're just looking at the numbers. If your starting assumption is that a car's value is proportional to cylinder count, then you'd *expect* the 718 to cost 33% less than the 981. By that logic, keeping the same MSRP as the 6-cylinder 981 represents a 50% increase in price over what it "should" cost! And that's BIG.

Pricing a car based on # of cylinders??? Please!!! How much do you get for the turbo?

"The base 718 Boxster will start at $57,050, while the Boxster S will begin at $69,450. That’s an increase of $3900 and $4500 over the previous car." Car and Driver.

If that is not a significant jump in price to you, all I can say is congratulations !

Cheers
I am looking at the base Cayman, not the Boxster. The price did not jump that much. Sorry.

Well, just saying, the 718 is the most expensive 4 cylinder production car sold in the US. So if you compare price to other similar models from other brands, it makes a difference on the marketing of the product. That is a reality not lost in the general public.

Cheers
It's so funny how some people equate the number of cylinders to the quality of a car. If that's the case then you must be saying that every 8 cylinder car on the market is better than every 6 cylinder car? Hmmm. Interesting.

Cayman 718 Base manual - $53,650 Porsche USA.

Cayman 981 Base manual - $52,650 Edmunds.

However all options have increased in price , substantially.

Cheers
Like I said, not a BIG jump. Thanks for confirming.

While internally, the internal codes might indicate one thing, the massive change to another engine PLUS the redesignation to another name indicates to the public this is another car, or at a minimum a new generation. People's perceptions are their reality and in doing so, its appropriate to look at generational changes in terms of sale, in which case, they are down.

This is exactly what I meant by startling. C&D is a well respected resource. It's been around longer than most members have been alive. No one car argue their credentials. The summary says it all.

718

"[the 981 sounds] could outperform the lead tenor at the Metropolitan Opera. The new notes fall more under the heading of karaoke howling, and the sound is enough of a loss to the overall experience that it would send us to the used-car listings in search of a previous-generation Boxster with the singing six instead."

This is a staggering statement. When have you ever heard this for a Porsche? The 996?

"aside from the sound, consider the 718 Boxster S the antidote to autonomous driving. ... To that we say enjoy the magic while it lasts."

Reads lukewarm to me. Sounds like a slam then lukewarm praise. No enthusiast wants autonomous driving.

981

"Consider this the sports-car enthusiast’s gold standard, rapidly approaching  platinum."

This is the mic drop. One is the "antidote" to autonomous driving and the author would rather buy a used 981 and the 981 is the gold standard for sports cars.

Of course, it is what it is. You have no choice and no amount of arguing is going to change it (at least in the current "climate" - heh, a pun). And it IS faster. It DOES have more tech. And these factors cannot be denied. But this thread was about the reviews and these two reviews from the same magazine epitomize what its about.
You forgot this quote from the C&D 718 Cayman review>>>

"Also well documented are some drivers’ vociferous objections to the new engine sound. But not all of us at C/D are in agreement; some of us, including this author, find the new engine note is sharp, unapologetic, and aggressive—perfectly in character with this example, a particularly racy runt of the 718 litter."

Just saying!

I live in Eastern Massachusetts where there are at least 4 Porsche dealerships within 60-70 miles of my house. Consequently, there are lots of Porsches around but I have yet to see one 718 Cayman on the road. I suspect that mine will be one of the few. Given the dismal sales figures, its almost like owning a limited edition car.
I work in Western MA and live in Northern CT and there is only 1 Porsche dealer in the general area. I have NEVER seen a Cayman on the road. Some Boxsters but never a Cayman - 718 or otherwise. I'm ordering mine at the end of the year so I can take delivery next Spring. I'll feel the same way about it being a unique, limited edition car. It's part of the allure of owning one, at least in these parts.

718 sales comparison. Note the shift in peak month from July to August from the 987 and 981 cars. My guess is timing on releases
Doesn't this belong in the "Cayman Sales Continue Downward Slide" thread???

No, these charts have existed here long before that thread existed. And this is not a Cayman chart but general chart, that is, 987, 981, 718. There is also a model chart coming at the end of the quarter.
What does the chart have to do with "Worst 718 Review?"
