987.2 Oil Pressure Sensor

Hello all,
I was recently greeted with an "Oil Pressure Monitoring Failure" message upon startup that hasn't gone away. It looks like this is most likely caused by a faulty oil pressure sensor, so I've ordered a replacement part, but haven't been able to find any install instructions. From what I can tell, the sensor is located on the top side of 997 engines near the oil filter housing and requires the removal of quite a bit of hardware removal. Is it in the same location (just rotated 180 degrees) in the Cayman? Or, it is perhaps near the oil filter housing on the underside of the engine? I'm hoping that I can DIY this without having to partially drop the engine.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.

The AllDataDIY instructions mention removing the engine access lid - then unscrewing two screws holding the sensor in, disconnecting it, replacing it and putting the engine access lid back on.

They have the following illustration (from the factory info undoubtedly):

This is on the 2.9L 987.2 engine. FWIW - The 987.1 sensor is just a pressure sensor.

Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.) The book labor is 1 unit of time (generally = 1 hour)..

Prices on the sensor range from $37 to $200.. depending on where you're buying from, and if OE or OEM.. (OE are the higher priced ones. They have a Porsche logo on the box, and it is easily worth an extra $150.) This is not a Porsche-specific part as usual - it's used on many other German vehicles. The Bosch number for it is: 0261230147 - searching that on Google will likely turn up a reasonably priced one. Porsche is OE, Bosch is OEM (and OE.)

Let us know how this goes.. a subscription to AllDataDIY is a small investment for a real DIY enthusiast (or if you're DIY from need like some of us were at one time..)

I swapped the sensor out yesterday which was trivially easy. I've attached a photo showing the sensor's location on the top of the engine. Unfortunately, changing out the sensor didn't fix the problem. I tried clearing the error, but it returns whenever I restart the car. I'm going to try disconnecting the battery just in case that helps. I did find another post on a differnt forum that mentioned that there's a technical service bulletin out that requires a software fix.

Hi - welcome to Planet-9, the Friendly Porsche Forum for confused owners who may have come here from Facebook..

It isn't easy to make an intelligent reply without knowing what car/engine we're talking about. How about giving us a bit of that info - car/year/engine? And EXACTLY what does the message on your dash say?

If it's a 987.2 (Boxster/Cayman 2009-2012) then the answer to your question appears in the posts above - is there something you don't understand?

RANT: Forums are not like Facebook. Facebook Porsche groups - someone asks a question, people post an answer, sometimes with useful info, often with bad info/advice or just bullsh!t, and then in 10 minutes you can't find the thread again. And there's no good way to search Facebook or even know the question was already asked/answered - so people ask the question again. In some groups there the same questions is asked on a daily basis, and answered with varying degrees of accuracy. Forums are different: A forum has searchable memory. What's written in posts here doesn't disappear, and can usually be retrieved rather easily. We also may ask for more information before replying with an answer (or reference to an existing thread) that helps answer your question accurately.

Better questions get better answers (me)...

We probably won't provide an instant answer - but the answers we provide are more likely to be helpful than the dreck that passes for answers on Facebook.

Welcome again (the rant was NOT addressed to you - it's a general issue I have with FB..)

I would love to have hooked the car up to one of my Foxwell tools to see if it can read continuity on the regulating valve.

YEA! I'm glad to hear it's resolved and really glad to hear the resolution. I had a similar mystery on my 987.2 - I realized one of my parking lights was never lighting up, and I'd get a bulb out warning about it. I replaced the bulb - and still was out. Spent a few days with the wiring diagram trying to sort it out, and finally pulled out the headlight assembly, and glanced at the connector. One of the pins was folded over and never got into the opposite connector. Don't have any idea when that happened, or how it happened - but luckily the pin could be bent back straight without fracturing - and it's working fine ever since.

Sometimes it is the simple things..
