And your reaction to the new 718 is?

So gentlemen, which of the following categories do y'all find yourselves in?

A) I'm not tempted. I got, and paid for, the real deal--all 6 of 'em. They pay even more and all they get is a 4-banger on drugs. Let 'em have a little more horsepower & acceleration--they can keep it.

OR . . .

B) At least I admit it. They've tempted me. I might trade in my 981.1 to get the extra zoom. I'll at least check it out.

OR . . .

C) I ain't not sucka! Almost since Professor Porsche invented the first hybrid for Lohner in 1899, every few years they bump the HP up in hopes you'll be fool enough to spend yet more money on a model that will become "obsolete" every bit as fast as the one you're thinking of trading in and losing a ton of money over. 'Definitely not tempted. PAG will not have me runnin' like a rat on a treadmill.

OR . . .

D) None of the above. (If you choose this option, ya gotta tell us what is on your mind.

Thank you in advance for your candid replies. :gossip:

D. Meh. Gimme the wail of the flat6 any day. If power and acceleration are that much more important, there's the 5 cylinder 2017 Audi TTRS at 400 ponies and around 55K.

I like the perf numbers and the rear taillights. The front looks ok, but seems a bit off. The rear looks ok though I'm not sure about the Porsche lettering. Overall, it'll probably sell well excluding the purists. Interesting that the S has 350 HP given that the base 911 has 370. Not sure where that leaves the GTS.

D.

It's a nice looking car and the torque will be fun for the street. However, probably not as much fun as winding out the NA F6. All that said, it will make a great sporty daily driver / weekend getaway car. Slightly tempted by it. But I would absolutely not trade in my Cayman for it. Maybe I would get the base boxster as a third/fourth car and turn the Cayman into a track car. LOL.

"A" - My car is paid for - love how my car sound - I still have a big grin each time I drive my car

I have a 2005 MB CLK500 that I keep around because I love how the V8 feel and its hum
I will keep my 981S for the same reason, I like how the Flat 6 delivers the power and its growls when windup.

To be fair, if I don't own a 981S and in market for a new convertible I would seriously consider the 718.

D for me, my goal is to remain an entry level Porsche person and pick up a 981 Spyder in about 4-6 years, most likely 6 years and only then will I get rid of my 08 BS.

I currently only find the 981 and Huracan spyder as the vehicles that interest me at this time. Since the Huracan is a pipe dream, my only reachable goal will be a used 981 Spyder.

Been down the 4 banger boosted path, never again.

Both A and C, since they aren't mutually exclusive.

I am surprised at the Canadian prices, at least the ones posted currently on the Porsche Canada website. The Base is $63,900 CDN and the S is $78,000, an increase of about 4 and 5 k over last year. At current exchange rates, the new prices are about $45K and $55K US.

The car will perform well, yet sound worse. Weight, since not mentioned, can be assumed to be either same or higher than the outgoing model.

And the looks... for me it's a step backwards from the current generation.

Tempted? Hardly. I'm still in the honeymoon phase with my current car.

I honestly don't like anything about it. It looks like my car but all tarted up for the high school prom. The Porsche lettering across the back is too in-your-face obnoxious, the front and rear are just busy for no reason, the interior looks more Audi. It doesn't do anything for me. I'm sure they will sell faster than ever, but I won't buy one.

D) very glad I'm getting a Spyder

Not a fan.
Just my opinion:
The interior vent changes look like they were made just so they could say there was a change. Doesn't add anything to the interior.
Exterior -front is fine.. That rear though. I don't like it as much. I've always liked the lines on the boxster, saw it as improved with each update. Fell in love with the 981 from the second I saw it. This just doesn't move me.
And that god awful tacky badge.. I've never de badged but this would be a first time.
Ymmv.

Indeed. Embarrassingly so.

Agreed. Robert Cumberford might say it's cleaner and that the current angry grill openings are too much an imitation of what's currently a passing fad throughout the industry. New Lexus grills look like they're out of an animated horror movie.

OK. You've upped my curiosity. Time to take another look at the pix of the rear logo. Thanks!

dmboone..Maybe it's because you and I have twins for cars but my take away was exactly the same as yours. Love the lights and steering wheel. I would swap the lights if possible. I suspect they will be different but we will see. The cost to change the wheel for the benefit of the dial would probably not be worth IMO...I already have the SDSW so picking up the dial only with a swap would be rich.

C) I still don't want to upgrade to the 981, let alone the 718. I do think the 718 is better looking than the 981, though, assuming a badge delete (the new badging is too much.)

I'm only in the my 30s, but I guess it's time for me to pull up my seat to the curmudgeon's table. They don't make them like they used to. I'll probably just put money back into my 987 for th long term. :)

Probably B. I like the four point LEDs in the front headlights and the rear tail lights look interesting too. I still probably like my 981.1 rear sculpture better since the Porsche lettering on the 981.2 looks corny. Need to see the rear in person to give final judgement. Don't like the interior vents, they look ugly, prefer the current setup. Steering wheel looks cool although I like the current wheel too, probably a tie there. I like the performance figures and speculated fuel consumption, but I still would need to hear the sound and test the engine feeling on a test drive. I am waiting for the 718 Cayman. If it's priced 2-3k below the 718 boxster I might take the plunge pending driving validation.

Two comments: I've read that some of the LEDs are on the options list--not standard.

Secondly, "need to hear the sound" might be a complex issue for some. If they go the phony BMW synthetic noise route, I'd have a hard time philosophically paying that kind of money knowing I was purchasing something the marketing department had stayed up late at night figuring out ways to pull the wool over my ears, so to speak. And, if they don't go the phony BMW route, it ain't gonna sound as sweet as 981.1. This may not appear to be a big issue, but consider this . . .

For those of us who don't track our cars, how often would we really be using the difference in acceleration between the very fast 981.1 and the even faster 981.2 (assuming that name will be used by the P-9 community)? In my case, I can't imagine needing even more acceleration than I already have on the street. OK, that's just me. But sound--I think that one affects all of us. I remember how vastly much faster my ol' '61 MGA 1600 felt because of how it sounded. In reality, it took something like 14 seconds to get to 60, which even back then was not exactly swift. So I think sound doers make more of a psychological difference than some of us might think at first consideration. Above 4000 RPM, the 981 makes me feel like I'm in Indianapolis. I've had a turbo'd 4-banger (MR2). It was a great car, but sounded like too many cigarettes had pushed it toward emphysema. I'm sure Porsche can do better, but it can't be the same as the current iteration 6-cylinder sound.

I have zero interest in a flat-4 turbo Cayman. :(

Which is why I bought my GTS when I did... Couldn't be happier with it.

This may be my first and last Porsche as I have no desire to own a 911 (GT cars not withstanding...).
