Boxster ticking noise at start up

Hello, I recently purchased a 2001 Boxster with 55K miles. When I start the engine hot or cold there is a ticking noise that last for about 10 seconds. It seems like it could be coming from the drivers side of the engine. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Scot in Alabama:)

If the ticking does not go away quickly when warm this may be the beginning of a failure path for the Variocam hydraulic solenoid/actuator. It intially starts ticking and sounds just like a sticking injector or lifter and progresses to the point where the engine sounds like it is coming apart in certain load/rpm bands.

The operation can be tested using the PIWIS system (and possibly the durametric tool IIRC) by disabling the actuator and determining if the noise went away.

Cheers,
