Gen 1 Boxster rear spoiler issue

Despite trying to resolve via several Porsche service centers (both independent and Porsche), none of them can figure out why my rear spoiler doesn't automatically deploy when it should. I've had my girlfriend follow me up to over 80mph and it doesn't deploy.
However I can manually deploy and retract using the button under the AC controls in the cabin. So the motor works just fine, but the PWIS system can't find any errors?
Could it be a defective speed sensor? And if so, is this a part that can be replaced?
I'm flummoxed...... even more so that Porsche have no clue!

If I can't get an easy fix, perhaps an aftermarket spoiler that provides enough down force in the non deployed mode may be an option? Any suggestions for something stylish that isn't overly raised and will not look ricey? I like the sleek lines of my car and don't want some ugly monstrosity like the kind you see on Honda's ;)

Surprised the dealer couldn't help you. The spoiler circuit is not that complex.

First though are you sure you are obtaining a speed at which the spoiler should deploy?

Can you raise the spoiler with the button and then at over 75mph lower the spoiler with the button?

If so then I suspect the signal (based on speed) from the DME is not at the spoiler. The presence of this signal causes the spoiler to deploy and yet prevents it from being retracted by the button until the signal (based on speed) goes away.

There are IIRC two relays in this circuit and a fuse. So you should at least consider the fuse or fuses and relays.

Fuses can affect seemingly unrelated items. Case in point: My Turbo spoiler is acting up going up and down crooked. To temporarily disable this until I can get it replaced I removed the spoiler fuse. Then the other day I tried to open the engine compartment lid. It would not open. Long story short is the fuse listed for the spoiler also is for the electric latch unlock motor for the engine compartment lid. One resource I consulted didn't mention this. Another source -- the pamphlet inside the fuse box cover -- did in very small print.

You are going to need some professional help in resolving this though so you need to return to the dealer.

My cranky half would remind the dealer it is an authorized Porsche dealer and you are bringing it a Porsche to work on not a Maytag washing machine.

If the service manager again can't help you ask to speak to the GM.

Lay out what happened and ask if this dealer's service department can't help you can the GM recommend another dealer or independent shop that can.

If the GM plays dumb -- and he won't -- ask for the number of PCNA customer service. State you want to call and get its mailing address and the persons to whom you should send a letter describing what happened and ask PCNA where would PCNA suggest you bring the car to get this looked into.

Before you do the above remind the dealer though that one reason you bought the car was the highly touted repair/service of this dealer and you feel to be turned away with no help for such a problem with easily reproducible symptom makes you feel like you have been misled, and a victim of consumer fraud.

My diplomatic self would try a, well, a more diplomatic path. Or maybe not.

On one hand I have the greatest respect for dealers and their staff and better than most customers understand some of the issues a dealer faces but when a dealer, its service department in this case based on what you posted drops the ball and acts dumb, not so much.

Thus in your shoes I would pull out all the stops to get the car repaired and repaired right.

If this means sending a written complaint to PCNA and contacting someone at the consumer fraud division in your area -- be able to state the address and phone number and that you already called (if only to get the address...) -- to get this resolved so be it.

Thanks for your reply.
You may have nailed the issue.
I had a spillage (turned a corner to fast, forgetting about the big gulp in the cup holder) and liquid got into the hood latch opener, which now doesn't work. The Porsche dealer said that the fuse was fine and that I could probably remove and clean the switch, or replace it.
So if the front latch switch and spoiler are connected, then this may be my issue!
I'll also try to put down the spoiler at speed add per your suggestion.
Thanks.
