mmm...must be manual if you want a sports car. I have driven both manual and tiptronic Cayman S cars and the tiptronic is good but does notsuitsuch a good sports car IMO. Mine is manualstandard shift

 

With tiptronic, I wouldn't know what to do with my right hand and left foot. It would absolutely drive me bonkers.

 

There was a poll about 3 months ago, whereas the result was that about 35% of the Cayman S are Tiptronic

 

dont start that old chestnut again roger ,by the way the new 911turbo is much quicker as a tip than manual is that not a proper sports car either ,as for the cayman i dont think which type of transmission you have makes it a more or less of a sports car its just different .


as for you japster just do what you normally do with your right hand.....................pick your nose ,wave to the pretty girls ,use your cellphone ,etc etc

 

Mine is manual - standard lenght. I choosed this option because I'm not sure that the actual tiptronic gear is good for this kind of car. Porsche declares that you loose half a second from 0 to 100 Km/h and in my opinion it's too much. When I was making the order, my car dealer told me that the short gear has some problem when the engine is cold, so ... I prefered to have a good compromise between a super sport gear and the tiptronic.

I ordered Tiptronic. I live in the LA area and worked in the Civic Center for most of 40 years. I pushed various clutch pedals for a lot of those years while commuting on the Santa Ana Freeway. My 'senior' knees no longer allow me the pleasure of shifting for myself.

 

My daily driver is auto, but my fun car, CaymanS, is manual

 

edoalb 50-75 tip 0.3sec faster than manual its not all about 0-60 and by the way i have a manual cayman here too and believe me you will not be able to out accelerate a tip unless you make a perfect start and i mean perfect .just dont think you guys reailse how good the tip is you have to live with it for a while .


perfect start every time ,wont eat your gearbox if you get it wrong, and you can use launch control ie 1st gear manual foot to the floor by the time you need second it changes for you ,i dont think you would have ever experienced this in a test drive at the opc

 

Mine is manual, short shifter. Tiptronic will be the top if we get something as the new Turbo.

dont get me wrong conrad i have had manual all my life and this is my firt tip so i am trying to at least defend what i know to be true ,i just think that some people think that you are less of an enthusiast if you have a tip which of course is not true and that a cayman without a manual gearbox is a lesser sports car not true again. i am begining to get paraniod about this

Here, here. I am so tired of these religious arguments about Tip, Sport Chrono, etc. When someone asks should I get ..., why can't people just keep their responses to facts and not their biases. I realize that something like Sport Chrono is more subjective than something substantial like Tip. However, when people start in with the "a Tip Porsche is not a real Porsche" statements, they lose all credibility with me.

Hi Raysman, I have never drive a Porsche and so never a Porsche with a Tiptronic. I know what I read or what I heard from people who had a direct experience. I admit that this is not enough to have a right opinion about this automatic gear. My idea is that this car can be well managed also with a manual gear, while i.e. the new Porsche turbo should be dangerous to use without tiptronic (too many Hp and torque). I heard that Porsche is projecting a new gear similar to the one of BMW ... but I don't know anything about this matter.

I hear you….. And I know most of us who are old enough don’t think so. Likewise, some like blonde and some like brunette. No one is going to say that if you choose a brunette, you will be less of a man. It is all about how you use the instrument.

I have never owned a Porsche. But somehow my notion of owning a Porsche is not about speed and raw power To me, it is about taking the right line, properly executing a turn and sliding thru the wind. What I am seeking are finesse and control. If one tranny is faster than the other by a second, he can always get there faster. And I have no problem with that. Not saying that I don’t like to compete, but I would rather do the race in a situation that the machine is not the key determination factor but the driver skills.

The bottom line is still “What ………….float your boat”. It is American way. It is good that there is no one here putting any one down for choosing tips.

 

Whilst my Cayman will be manual my carrera is tip. I find that I rarely leave it in drive these days - it is nearly always in manual mode. Far more fun that way - even in city driving and, imho, safer as you are (nearly)aways in the correct gear, less lag etc. It would be interesting to hear how most of the Cayman tiptronic owners drive their cars - manual or drive? Perhaps this could be a poll although as a new member I am unsure whether this has been asked before.


Just whiling away an autumn Saturday morning here in Australia waiting to take my 16 yo son to his soccer game. At least he can drive me as kids get their L plates here at 16!

It is definitely noticeable. Like everyone who's gotten it says, the car simply "feels" more powerful. The only thing I've noticed so far that I didn't like is that it causes engine braking to occur more often or at least more notivceably. Also remember that PCM + SC Plus gives you the ability to set driver prefs.

 

Iordered the preferred plus package w/ tiptronic s. I drive through a lot of hills and a whole lot of stop and go...it gets pretty tiring constantly shifting gears.

It would be interesting to learn the split between tiptronic and manual. What did you buy/order?

manual or tiptronic? you can be god damn sure tiptronic is the **** dude tiptronic rocks,this is 2006 tech,that stick that you call manual is old school and its so 2000....just see in all the worlds best sports cars like ferrari and lambo they got the steering wheel standard and not manual....besides,tip its alittle bit faster

I wasn't aware that Tip is faster. Do you have any published numbers to back this up? Every number I've seen on Caymans are always slightly slower on Tip. BTW...I'm not anti-Tip as I have a Tip Cayman. I'm just anti-BS.
