Newbie needs advice!

I have followed this forum for the past 6 months and enjoy reading the advice of the obviously dedicated Cayman owners. Now I need some advice.
My 3 series lease is up and I am considering buying a Cayman S. A local dealer has a demo car that is a 2007 with 3000 miles on it. It is a base Cayman S with the preferred pkg + and has never been titled. I looked up kelly blue book projected values and average trade in is around 41k and average retail is around 46k. The original sticker is 65K and they are asking 54k. I would never consider that price for a 2 yr old vehicle but what do you guys think? I was going to offer 43 and not go above 46. Do you think that is reasonable? The car has some minor blemishes on the body, the interior is in good shape with no visible blemishes; it is in really good shape. I have wanted to own a Cayman for many years and this may be a good opportunity to do so.
Thanks in advance for your opinions. I have really enjoyed the forum and value your opinions.

At least one owner on this site posted recently that his lease '07 expired with I think about 13K mi (I may be a bit off here...can quite remember) and the desidual was about $44K +/-..... He stated that Porsche didn't want the car back and he negotiated a buy out for under $30K....

Seems that ought to be your starting point...

While this is all unsubstantiated fish stories, it is true that dealers do not want the cars coming off lease and being hit with the pre-crash residuals. An off lease car may be situationally cheaper than an un-titled demo, and possibly a better car. If the demo is to your liking, though, I'd say your initial post is on the right track. $54M is a pipe dream.

Agreed that $54K is much too high. Mileage is lower than usual, but who knows what kind of test drives were done during those 3000 miles. Check the panel on the driver's door to see the actual manufacturing date, it could even be from 2006! But if you can get it for your price, it could still be a good buy. If they won't go as low as you want, try to get them to extend the warranty. It's a buyer's market now. They don't need an '07 demo anymore, they need an '09. And you need a CS. :)

When did the warranty clock start ticking?

54k is just a few points better a deal than a lot of people got on brand spanking new cars.

You can get a better car for $40k out on the street right now. More miles, though. But that doesn't matter once the warranty clock stops. If you go through an independent dealer, you can get an 07 for $35k w/ 15-20k miles at a lease return auction. Or buy retail from them like this car:

If you really want THAT car, start at $40k and an extended warranty. IMO $45k w/ an extended warranty wouldn't be too bad.

Internet advice is worth what you pay for it, of course. LOL.

Good luck. Have fun.;)

Another thought...

Search lease transfer companies and try to find a 24 month lease that has 6 months or less on it. Take over the lease, and negotiate the buyout as it is about to expire. I don't know the details about how this works, but if possible...you could get into an 07 for a few lease payments plus $30k. Hmmm.....

40k sounds like a resonable starting point to me as well. I don't think the dealer will go down much further because they have yet to make any profit on the vehicle. Were the car coming off a two year lease, the preious owner would have paid out between 35-40k in payments and the dealer should be more willing to cut a deal.

As has been mentioned by others, unless you really want this car, you should be able to find a slightly higher mileage used CS (same or better options) coming off lease for a better price.

Thanks all.
I am going up on Thursday evening to drive it and see what the dealer has under his fingernails. I was also going to pursue the possibility of discounted service visits; we'll see.
I'll post the results later.
