It was either on here or ******** don't recall which thread exactly but but I do recall at least a couple different members mentioned they enabled it successfully and yes they had to get an activation code and maybe even center console switch to add sports plus button.
OK yea that's what I remember reading. It's definitely more invovled

My car was built Apr 2012, but by the VIN it's considered a 2013 car. I don't really understand why they do this.

Unless you setup an internet connection specifically in the VM it won't be able to talk to Porsche. I have no idea how to do this if you wanted to. When using PIWIS, it asks if you want to create a VAL (vehicle analysis log). I assume this is a way to talk back to Porsche for warranty and recording purposes. I always say 'no' and continue and everything works fine. I have all the functionality I want for normal DIY stuff.
A VAL is a comprehensive vehicle check. I ran one with a PIWIS 3 on a 918 and it took 40 minutes and the report was over 120 pages. But you were right to say No to creating a VAL. Its creates a report that later asks to be sent to Porsche to verify warranty work.

I've had experience with the PST2, PIWIS, PIWIS 2 and now the PIWIS 3 and the worst of the group is the PIWIS 2. it is slow ( and even slower in VM mode) awkward to use, bulky, crappy cables that need to be replaced and now if you are trying to put one together you will have to get the VCI interface from China. Samtech stopped making them a few years ago. And while there are a few clone makers they use different incompatible drivers so the PIWIS 2 software you find may not work and the various makers use different cabling so one sources cables may not work on anothers VCI

Get the PIWIS 3 I highly recommend it far superior to the PIWIS 2.

yea I’m sure 3 is much better, but then you’re also talking about $1500 min vs $400

For a proper setup with reliable equipment its more like $1000 s $3200 including laptops but the later is current so runs up to 2020 models ( I know as I've connected to a few already).

@jjrichar maybe update your original post for this new bug that seems to be going around since 2021 hit. If users are getting stuck with "Loading ODX Data" change the VM's system clock back to 2020

I have been having problems with my PIWIS over the past few days as well. I may have made some progress but was getting stuck at the "Loading ODX Data" stage (which should only last for a few seconds) too. It occurred to me to wonder about the date. I have found that if I set the date of my VM back to 2020 (I set it back exactly 1 year to Jan. 2020) then PIWIS will complete loading! If you are using the VirtualBox VM method I followed steps from this link to stop the VM time from being the same as the host machine time:
Prevent VirtualBox Guest Syncing Time with Host

Then I manually set the time back inside the VM by one year and PIWIS worked again. I tested a few times and it really does seem to be calendar related. With the steps above the VM will be back to the real (after 2020) time following each boot and will need to have the time manually set back to 2020 or earlier. There is probably a tidier approach to fixing this, but you can try disabling the VM-to-host time sync and manually changing the year and see if that lets you use your PIWIS again.

Happy New Year.

Yo .. also hit by the Y2K21 PIWIS Bug... thanks to this forum and here is the easy way out for the non tech. inclined.. As long as your system is Windows based and your PIWIS VM is named PIWIS this should be smooth sailing... Just copy this into any batch file (i.e. piwis.bat) on the system your Piwis is running from, start it, enjoy, Thanks ;)

Just to add to the general information in this thread. I had the situation where the VM itself was VERY slow (took about 10 minutes just to get to the Windows XP desktop). It was unworkable. I followed some of the recommendations on this thread which helped me out:

VirtualBox is very slow in Windows 10 - Super User

I believe that it was Hyper-V interfering with VirtualBox and that disabling it did the trick. The desktop comes up in less than 15s now. What threw me off was that this was not the case after I originally installed it. I believe a Windows update must have created the issue.

Hello Gents,

Sorry a bit late to the party on this one, but I have gone through the process and have a question if anybody can help.

I tried to use the Oracle VM software and battled with it for a few days, in my opinion it’s a heap of garbage, lots of errors which I could not isolate. I gave up, as one minute it worked then crashed, it couldn’t even make its own shell with nothing in it! So I exported the image file installed VMware workstation (free) imported that and it worked perfectly 🥳🥳.

Anyway, back to the question as I cannot find an answer what ‘hardware’ do I need for this as it is not clear at all. I have seen comments of ‘VCI’ box etc, what’s that for if the programme is installed on the VM, there are different cable versions one with 4 pins and another with maybe 8!!

Any help would be very much appreciated

Bus DriverUK, you will need one Piwis2 system avaiable through various chinese clone sellers, the original Piwis2 hardware came from Porsche / Santec and is quite expensive and tough to get hold off, the chinese cloned the design and are offering the HW through most of the OBDII shops infamous for selling such devices

Cost will be in the $300-400 range, there are discussion on the HW on this forum and other place, just look up Piwis2

The Box as shown will connect through USB to your PC and to the car through the OBD2 connector ..

There has been some recent discussion on the VCI you mentioned, kind of a multi-manufacturer dongle hardware, where you need some special flashing/setup procedure to make it porsche-compatible and supposedly the Piwis SW could be setup to run on it .. mhhauto would be the right forum then I think.

I decided to go the traditional Santec hardware way for 3xx bucks, versus some 100 bucks hardware supposed to run after a 150 bucks flah/adjustment and 100 bucks for modified SW .. and it does works.

I might be too much of a sceptic but nowhere in the Porsche community did I found anyone of any credibility who successfully went down the VCI road, guys talking about it looked more like shills trying to sell their hardware / software / services to the gullible, but hey .. I might be off .. YMMV

jjrichar, I just wanted to thank you for all your hard work and meticulous details on setting up and working with the PIWIS tester. This thread is the most comprehensive and informative one for PIWIS 2 on the internet. Without all this info, I'd probably still be fiddling around with the usual run of the mill lackluster OBD2 scanners instead of having the full functionality of the PIWIS system. I've been able to program a steering wheel swap, activate Sport Plus, update my PDK operating software to install a Cobb PDK tune, and set maintenance reminders so far. I'll be using the PIWIS to do a PDK service and brake flush with ABS soon.

FWIW Porsche manual says ABS cycle is not needed for a flush, unless you remove the master cylinder

Only When Replacing The Hydraulic Unit
: Bleed the secondary circuit using PIWIS Tester
II 9818 . Otherwise, continue with the concluding steps (Steps 5 and 6).
4.1. Select >>PSM>>Maintenance/repairs>>Bleeding hydraulic unit<< in the control
unit overview.
The four wheel brakes are bled alternately (as per Tester display)
2. 4.2. Remove vent hoses and tighten bleeder valves to 14 Nm (10.5 ft. lbs.).
3. 4.3. Remove PIWIS Tester II.

Yes, enabled sport plus, software update PDK, DME and instrument, read / clear codes - if any. All the things dealer can do (if you have the knowledge)
Hi,

I also wanted to retrofit Sport Chrono including Sport+ button.

Unfortunately I cannot get it to work - even when I place it on another button, I cannot activate it. Need to mention that I got a working unlock code for Sports Chrono for my VIN which is working in PCM and also in the climate control unit - unforunately I cannot make the button work.

Do you know how to solve this problem? I got a PIWIS II with developer mode activated - maybe you know a solution I haven't seen yet.

Thanks in advance :)

ok this is going to make a lot go 981/991 owners happy and see attached how I did it in the BKE menu.

The final step after assigning the sport plus button is to confirm that reassigned switches are recoded. At "kodierwert" in same menu activate as yes (and also the others you may have changed.
